โ€œJourney In Satchidanandaโ€ by Alice Coltrane (1971)

https://songwhip.com/alice-coltrane/journey-in-satchidananda

Powerful spiritual from the incomparable .

NPR says it better than I could: โ€œAlmost 50 years after Journey In Satchidananda was released, the album remains a vision of universal healing, spiritual self-preservation in times of trouble and the god that appears when you seek her out."

Stunning.
Transportive.
Highly recommended. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

โ€œWhen You Were Mineโ€ by Cyndi Lauper (1983)

https://songwhip.com/cyndi-lauper/when-you-were-mine

A massively successful album released in late โ€˜83 and would see singles released through early โ€˜85.

But I, on steady diet of Ratt, Quiet Riot and Van Halen, didnโ€™t think this was for me.
I was too eager to put things in boxes back then.

My loss, and one I rectified later in life. Itโ€™s a great record - I love her cover of this Prince song.

The Horace Silver Quintet - "The Tokyo Blues" (1962)

I found this original mono lp at a thrift store yesterday - and at a place that never has decent records. It's in shockingly nice condition.

https://songwhip.com/loudness/crazy-nights

was the first Japanese band signed to a major label in the US, and this is their most popular song in the West, by far.

Guitarist Akira Takasaki absolutely shreds on a couple of solos here. ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿค˜

โ€œThe Plum Blossomโ€ by Yusef Lateef (1961)

https://songwhip.com/yusef-lateef/the-plum-blossom

Early morning coffee & even the dog is feeling lazy today.
So, letโ€™s enjoy the calm while we can with this opening track from โ€™s album Eastern Sounds.

The melody here is produced by Lateef on a Chinese xun. Like an ocarina itโ€™s one of the oldest instruments in China, in use for around 7000 years.

Pianist Barry Harris provides a delightful and more traditional counterpoint.

โ€œCoyoteโ€ by Joni Mitchell (1976)

https://youtu.be/i4KBohkaHDE?si=J-9u8YUAWWQJsc3k

I couldโ€™ve picked any song from this record. A desert island disc for me for sure. Itโ€™s like comfort food for the ears.

Pitchfork described the album as "restless music of road and sky, narratives unfurl with driving forward motion".

Musicians such as Bjรถrk, Danielle Haim, Weyes Blood, and St. Vincent have named the album as a favorite.

Itโ€™s a record only couldโ€™ve made. โค๏ธ

New year, new stylus.
Something I probably put off for too long, and the upgrade from Ortofon Red to Blue really was a snap.

There was a brief dilemma as to the album to test with, but honestly it was always going to be this or maybe Aja.

โ€œBlue Trainโ€ by John Coltrane (1958)

Sometimes, when I donโ€™t know what I want to hear, I reach for this record. And the opening notes of this first track always validate that choice.

yeah, of course, but youโ€™ve also got Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Paul Chambers, โ€œPhillyโ€ Joe Jones and Kenny Drew.

- โ€“ Blues and the Abstract Truth (1961). Bringing his big band arranging skills into the small combo arena (Eric Dolphy on flute & sax, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Bill Evans on piano, etc.), Nelson leads the charge on lyrical pieces (โ€œStolen Momentsโ€), folk dance interpolations (โ€œHoe Downโ€), and post-bop barnstormers (โ€œCascadesโ€ and โ€œTeenieโ€™s Bluesโ€). In an era of experimentation, this LP often recalls the cool jazz of the previous decade.

Early morning quiet, and this track suits quite nicely.

The debut album by drummer as a bandleader.

The track seems to float on the ether, subtly shifting and changing through the beautiful interplay among the band, Joe Henderson on sax, Steve Swallow on bass, Steve Kuhn on piano and, of course, La Roca on drums.

โ€“ TOP 10 - โ€“ Hereโ€™s Little Richard (1957). โ€œTutti Frutti,โ€ โ€œLong Tall Sallyโ€ and โ€œRip it Upโ€ are among the infectious gems on this quintessential early rock and roll LP. Sessions in New Orleans with top backing musicians fueled the fire already exuded by Little Richard Pennimanโ€™s magnetic persona and jet-fueled voice. Richardโ€™s style adrenalized the jump blues of Louis Jordan and Joe Turner, keeping one foot in R&B as he tore up the house.

โ€œBlood Of The Pastโ€ by The Comet Is Comingโ€ (2019)

When looking to cue up the soundtrack of the End Times and later Rebirth, one could do worse than this album from

Spiritual and Cosmic jazz in the tradition of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra, but with a forward looking focus.

Its an impressive tapestry across the record, each song blending sounds and styles into the next - worth the trip!
