Interestingly reading about China's EV "innovations" it feels as though they are trapped in the mindset of pleasing the white people – big full OLED screens, fancy interiors that Cheeto would love instead of doing stuff that would actually be useful to the consumers.

Also thought of this given how Buicks were apparently popular in China

janl,
@janl@narrativ.es avatar

@divya For Japan specifically, I also see parallels with how anything high-state/culture/religion had to be modelled after China for a thousand years.

janl,
@janl@narrativ.es avatar

@divya absolutely. It is very weird they took so much from the occupier’s culture. Of course the US helped by forbidding anything remotely “native” that could be traced back to the empire, but I’m still amazed that Baseball became their most popular sport by far.

I'm curious about the choice of batteries in the MNT Reform. Is it something to do with better life? Repairability (looks like it for sure)?

janl,
@janl@narrativ.es avatar

@jalcine no rare earth materials.

janl,
@janl@narrativ.es avatar

@jalcine at least cobalt-free, which is a biggie. I just double checked.

Oh, Apple.

You just understand us Pro users so well.. of course we were waiting for the latest iPad Pro and are happy to wait for new pro desktops until the current ones are half the performance of our phones. 🤪

Learned loads about lime quarrying and cement production today. The Brandenburg Gate’s materials came from here (and most everything else in Berlin you see today).

In the tunnels under the hill in pic #4 on the far right, the Nazi government hid the national science library from allied bombing and the GDR government had its emergency bunkers there.

Limestone monoliths across earth ages.

@akahn noice!

janl,
@janl@narrativ.es avatar

Additional fun fact: the aristocrats owners were forbidden from cement production for a while because the air pollution was so bad that the local cattle farmers sued for stop of production to save their animals.

Just this week and not 15km away, Tesla was granted an extension of their factory despite the region being already starved for water and T needing and polluting ever more.

The stories are always the same, no matter the century.

And a few more pics.

@ramsey @cate @grmpyprogrammer in my experience, knowing what your 1-up’s life looks like makes your life a lot easier. It also tells you what you can expect. (That said, you’ve been around the block an few times, so maybe not super necessary for you :)
