Mastodon has successfully sold 12 million people on the practical use of decentralization because they see it in action. And they love it.

Bluesky’s biggest fans think decentralization is horseshit—and they’re hostile to it being implemented.

This is a bad omen for Bluesky.

@atomicpoet Is this just one guy ranting? And I do entirely sympathize with his point. People just want a social network that your friends actually use and for there to be good social content there. The vast majority of people don't care about the tech details. Mastodon is a bit of a tech nerd echo chamber that doesn't represent the "normies"

jbwharris,

@atomicpoet You are definitely identifying a fatal flaw. It's all normies banging on the door wanting onto Bluesky, but they haven't done any leg work on the decentralization piece and they're probably all Mastodon types who might have been here pre-2022.

I don't think we need to have a Mastodon vs. Bluesky showdown. I think they're too different.

The longer post format on Mastodon (extended much further on some instances) leads to more discursive posts. You can get more thoughts down. Show nuance. Flesh out your arguments.

The Bluesky limit of 300 characters lends itself to hot takes, pithiness, sharp wit and shitposts.

I don't think any of those things are bad - but maybe they have their place, and that place is more there, than here.

@sarajw I think that's where much of the pithiness on Mastodon is coming from, they're worried another protocol will invalidate the Fediverse. I'd like to think the idea of decentralized services will push the whole industry forward. And the reality is, while AP has a head start, there has been no money behind it. There is no face to the idea and unfortunately you need someone with money to push it more broadly

@macrumors I know BlackBerry was obsessed with this, but who is asking for this advancement?

Dropbox is the next company firing a significant amount of people to pursue the magical dragon "AI". Dropbox. A service that people just want to store their files, sync properly and make them shareable.

Sure they need some bullshit generators. The whole tech sector is just brain worms these days.

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@tante Dropbox, the company that has always had the shittiest pricing tiers. I’m honestly so annoyed we use them at work when their plans are all so overkill. 3TB of storage per user when we have 20gb of files 😂

    @Cloudguy I don’t know you, but at the same time will use this opportunity to freshen up my Amazon security all the same knowing most people like yourself don’t sound the alarm without good reason 😬

    @jt_rebelo @Cloudguy it was pretty easy, though I didn’t like that the setting was buried under Account compromised settings.

    @bowreality @Cloudguy look under the Compromised Account section, sign out everywhere is in there

    Jack Dorsey enthusiastically co-signed the deal that betrayed 200 million Twitter users and handed their accounts over to a fucking right wing egomaniacal billionaire. You’ll have to excuse me if I’m not eager to sign up for another one of this dude’s schemes.

    @Green_Footballs I do have a tough time hanging that on him personally. Basically Capitalism sucks and Twitter nailed Elon's balls to the wall because his offer was good for shareholders. Elon made his own bed by shooting his mouth off and was made to lay in it.

    @mookie @czottmann I really enjoyed that particular episode, but in retrospect, it was very pointless. It gave me hope there was some bigger scope to this season, but really all it ended up being was an implication that the Empire was still active in the background (which given the Sequels, we already knew)

    jbwharris,
    @jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

    @mookie @czottmann You just figured it was going to significantly course correct the whole season, then didn’t. You can assume the New Republic spy will have a higher profile in possibly Ahsoka given they really went out of their way to introduce and flesh her out from being just a side character. And it’s reasonably clear the FiloniVerse is pulling levers for story outside of singular series at this point.

    @mike @killerboots It’s going to be interesting to see the next few years. The Wings, Sens and Sabres are all looking at the same contention window.
