Things you find on Facebook 😂

I received this email from the Cambridge Times and think it really embodies the disconnect that exists. The idea that they feel their publication is my favourite and that the print edition was beloved. When I think of the print edition I think junk mail, a paper that prioritized selling its front cover to a used car 4 page ad. A paper that got thinner and thinner, while filling the paper with articles from Guelph and KW instead of covering Cambridge.

@waterlooregion It’s been a long time since Cambridge has had a newspaper that was beloved, and odds are it’s back to when the Cambridge Reporter closed.

Damn, that finale was phenomenal. Some of the best crafted television I’ve seen in a long time, and I’m not even quantifying that with comic book television. It was that good.

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@RememberUsAlways to be honest, I hope so. I’m a big fan of tight storytelling, and given the structure of the MCU there’s no real reason it couldn’t stand on its own as 12 episodes of excellence, then have the story carry on in some other way in the MCU. Though I’m also cynical of Hollywood’s ability to leave anything alone.

My new iPhone 15 Pro Max finally arrived! Told the FedEx guy via the doorbell cam to hold on a minute while I rushed up to the front door, which he happily did.

He even told me how to add instructions next time. Good guy.

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@kevinlovestech How are you finding the 15 Pro Max? I’m planning on doing a mega jump from 8+ to one, and was curious on impressions in general.

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@kevinlovestech So what would you say is the key difference between the 14 Pro Max and the 15 Pro Max? I was kinda weighing all my options, including maybe the 15 Plus. But as I'm so removed from modern iPhone designs, I'm weighing the size/function/price at the point.

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@kevinlovestech I guess the action button is the key differentiation, aside from always on screen. Have you found the action button handy?

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, the word “grok” has always grated on my nerves for no reason I can adequately articulate. Same with “tricksy”, while I’m at it. Just nails on a chalkboard.

So, what word do you wish some author had never forced into existence?

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@Meyerweb Addicting used where the word addictive should be

Polls are not objective reflections of public opinion – they help construct that which they ostensibly just measure. But that also means they have a massive impact shaping political behavior.

And this one is really concerning – because “Biden too old” seems to dominate everything else.

🧵1/

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/05/us/politics/biden-trump-2024-poll.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@tzimmer_history The “but her emails” line was effective because the Right hammers on singular issues. While to discuss the issues with Trump could take days to articulate the misdeeds, they boil grievances into one liners that it’s easier to hang on a rival. And it works, which is so ironic because the accusation is more an admission about Trump than anything. Septuagenarians and octogenarians shouldn’t be running anything in society, but instead they run everything.

jbwharris,
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@Virginicus @tzimmer_history but is that the message hammered home at debates, social media or CNN/MSNBC? No.

Here's a tip... instead of subscribing to YouTube Premium or disabling your ad blocker, just subscribe to Nebula. It's what YouTube should have been in the first place, not the trash fire it is today

If you have a personal website: what is your URL and why did you pick it? Is it your name? Is it a nickname/alias? Or something else? And are you happy with it or would you choose a different domain name today?

jbwharris, (edited )
@jbwharris@mstdn.ca avatar

@matthiasott My URL is my username, https://jbwharr.is

I always wanted to do it, and pulled the trigger on it a few years ago, registering the Icelandic domain of my dreams.

To those who might decide this is a boring choice, I did the nickname thing for years and eventually found my way to just using my own name to represent myself. As someone who's used the web for nearing on 30 years, I've been through many aliases and now am just comfortable in my own skin being me online.

X's success as an everything app will "exceed" China's WeChat, Musk says.

Can't go past this guy for analysis...

Noam Chomsky - on being asked in July 2016 why the U.S. supports Israel

"Well, there's a history..."

summarised in this brief video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUQ_0MubbcM

Note re Chomsky's answer:
Christian Zionism, in a Christian context, holds that Israel's founding in 1948 accords with Bible prophecy: that Jewish sovereignty in the Levant - the "Gathering of Israel" - is a prerequisite for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

@DrALJONES I find when you process this particular idea a lot of what happens in the US makes sense. From foreign policy to unflappable MAGA support, the idea that a certain segment of the population is actively trying usher in the biblical end of days.

So our Kenmore dishwasher of 20 years has finally given up the appliance ghost. Considering the lifetime of these things is around 12-15 years, we had a great run.

Now begins the arduous process of finding a replacement. If anyone has any serious recommendations about a reliable dishwasher brand / model I should look at, I would welcome the advice. Thx!

Thanks Thank You GIF by BLKBOK

Making my 11+ years old Mac minis (i5, i7) useful again. One runs macOS 13.3 now, the other is currently installing Sonoma — and both allow me to test my apps on real hardware right here on my desk. Good stuff!

The i7 already has a SSD installed and max RAM. The i5 has a SSHD, and I’ll replace its measly 4GB RAM with 2×8GB next weekend. Both are surprisingly fast!

Thanks again, OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher (https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/)!

@czottmann I have a 12 year old HP Probook running an old version of macOS and it still runs quite capably. macOS does run pretty well on older hardware, but Apple just doesn’t want people to do that for planned obsolescence reasons

    Ah, school season, where ultra-shiny lifted 5,000 pound double-cab pick-up trucks shoot past you in the turn lane because you are only doing 5mph over the posted school zone speed limit. But at least you can wave at them at the very next stop light!
