tired: overnighting car parts from japan

wired: buying car parts from some rando on ebay and hoping they're not fake or wrong when they arrive a week or so later

I added a USB port inside my ThinkPad X1 Nano

https://jcs.org/2024/05/29/x1usb

jcs,
@jcs@jcs.org avatar

@Sharedcow It seems unaffected, the mouse still works ~10 feet away which is far more than I'd ever need.

FWIW, the X1 Nano's case is made of carbon fiber and Magnesium

Do you set NO_COLOR in your default shell configuration?

I’m looking forward to reading when @jcs tries #OpenBSD on the ARM thinkpad that Lenovo announced

jcs,

@daneharrigan Nah, I need hardware accelerated graphics at least

Hi @jcs , I was reading https://jcs.org/2021/07/19/desktop again at wondered if you ever measured the power consumption of this setup?

jcs,
@jcs@jcs.org avatar

@joel I did not, and I didn't keep it very long (just not a desktop guy I guess)

jcs,
@jcs@jcs.org avatar

@joel I don't remember any specific issues but it's been a while. Complaints were just not liking the keyboard, taking up lots of desk space, etc.

Noticing a lot of eBay descriptions clearly written by AI lately. Like a 4th grader trying to boost the word count of an essay with sum-zero phrases.

I’ve not sold on eBay in years so I’m curious to know if they’ve added an AI description service for sellers or are sellers getting them from an external service?

jcs,
@jcs@jcs.org avatar

@paulrickards There's a button in the app that does it for you

One more Google service removed from my life, Google Fi - insanely difficult to port out my number, but done now.

Three left:

Google Music - kids listen to it a lot, but getting them hooked on Plex amp

Gmail - in progress of moving to Proton

Photos - will be the hardest because it's still the best UX out of any manager

Google's completely lost any appeal.

jcs,
@jcs@jcs.org avatar

@nulleric I highly recommend Fastmail

Many of my projects seem to end right at the point where I have to design a PCB and then I give up. I need a Tinkercad for lazy PCB making.

Maybe instead of replacing everything with Rust, we can start by not relying on 25,000-line autoconf shell scripts

The Mac Portable VGA Out board V1 is done:
https://androda.work/product/vga-adapter-for-macintosh-portable/

The listing is up but there's very minimal stock available from the fist test run. Will get another production run going soon.

jcs,

@TechByAndroda I think it might be illegal to have two Pi Picos in one computer

Supposedly a non-root RCE in OpenBSD up to 7.4, appears to require NFSd running though?

I usually try to keep you informed about interesting commits that are happening, but we're all clenching for NetBSD 10 right now...

Regardless, nat committed a new audio driver...

... for Motorola 68000 Macintoshes. enjoy!
