Just had another wow moment while checking https://mapstodon.space's timeline: so much rich and diverse content, in many different languages, with a fresh and spontaneous balance between on-topic and off-topic conversations, and nothing but good vibes all around!

Thanks to everyone for making our little corner of the internet friendlier and more interesting everyday :)

As a non-native English speaker, one of the reasons I love on Mastodon (let alone their obvious accessibility benefits) is that they're a great way to learn new words or new ways of describing things.

Hi @ente, I've been using your services for a couple of weeks and quite like it so far. Two questions though!

  • I'm missing a few editing features. I'd like to be able to slightly rotate an image to get it perfectly horizontal, or to access more tuning features (even, why not, a couple of presets - aka "filters" - sometimes they're a good start to fine tune the image). Do you plan to integrate those? Or what workflow would you suggest?

  • Any recommendation regarding printing?

Thanks!

Great lesson about centering things on the web. Could be pretty useful for cartography too, on the web or not.

Meta is allegedly sharing Whatsapp data to the IDF...

"Israel is killing people based on being in the same Whatsapp group as a suspected militant. Where are they getting this data? Is WhatsApp sharing it?"

I know I'm late to the party but didn't want to be guided by urgency: after quite a lot of reading, and exchanges with people here and there, I decided to defederate https://mapstodon.space from Threads.

I hesitated for a long time because, beyond what Meta represents, it seemed crucial to me to keep the door open to all users, as opposed to the kind of "entre-soi" that is cultivated a little too often in the Fediverse. The revolution shouldn't just be for the happy few. (1/4)

jeremy,
@jeremy@mapstodon.space avatar

However, I now see the federation with Threads as having more negative than positive effects. I mostly agree with Arthur Perret's analysis in this post (in French, worth trying an automated translation) published in December: https://www.arthurperret.fr/blog/2023-12-16-faire-commun-2-etreindre-etendre-eteindre.html.

His conclusion sums things up quite well: "The objective (...) is not to prohibit Meta from using ActivityPub or from participating in W3C discussions concerning the protocol. The aim is to deny Meta the position of dominant player in these discussions. Fediverse must assert its independence if it doesn't want to be marginalized in spaces where its very conditions of existence are largely determined."

Reading @organicmaps ideas for 2024 is super exciting: satellite image support (fixing issue 618?), track recording, GeoJSON support, waterways routing, alternative routes, public transport support... 🤩 🤩

Let's hope there will be many candidates to work on these!

It's 2024 and we still don't have a "https://" key by default on every keyboard.

(But there are already some keyboards out there with the Copilot key, heh)

Pleased today because:

  • Submitted paper that had been sitting a pretty long time while co-authors checked their bits

  • Got cautiously positive response from a research foundation I've approached for a collaboration

Now we need an OpenStreetEarth 😁

Please stop illustrating your posts with AI, it sucks.

There are plenty of great human artists out there. Take the globe that illustrates the https://mapstodon.space instance homepage: I searched for "globe" on Unsplash and @orbisterrae's work came out - which I didn't know about before. Gaël nicely agreed that we use the image, and even registered an account here.

Not mentioning that AI images all look the same - boring, soulless, stupid.

Humans rock, machines don't.

Thank you.

Lisez cet article:

Casually thinking about how a service like @panoramax is one of the two missing pieces that would allow me to not use Google Maps anymore (1). I didn't plan to contribute to it before but I will definitely consider it now :)

(1) The other one being the ability to access to aerial/satellite imagery on the same service/page where I access the OSM based maps.
