This house in in the outskirts of the DFW suburban wasteland is $650K.

Jesus. Fucking. Christ.

Where do I even begin with this monstrosity?

jezebelkat,
@jezebelkat@famichiki.jp avatar

@FlockOfCats @slims

Plano/Frisco for my teen years, Denton for grad school.

Allow me to assure you, everything is, which is why I found DFW (and Texas suburbia in general) so depressing after a childhood in vibrant Nuevo México.

ME TOO.

My mother lives there still, apartment just down the road a bit. And when we sold the house, the realtor actually asked "wouldn't you want this house, your childhood home, are you sure you want to sell it?"

And I nearly laughed in her face and just said I was 14 when we moved in.

My childhood home is a Pueblo Revival in Las Cruces.

hot j-in-e take:

Native Japanese YouTubers who communicate in English and orient (verb intended) their channels towards Anglosphere viewers are worse about leverging "OOH, EXOTIC JAPAN!" than many immigrant YouTubers with the same shtick.

And I'm tired of telling the YT algorithm to stop serving me their trash.

jezebelkat,
@jezebelkat@famichiki.jp avatar

It's like the worst of both worlds, as it both generalises Japan and Japanese people, while also reinforcing 日本 vs 外国 nonsense with topics like "WHAT JAPANESE PEOPLE HATE THAT FOREIGNERS DO"

...yo, there are 196 countries, one of which is Japan, and Japanese people do all of that shit too. Your poop also stinks.

jezebelkat,
@jezebelkat@famichiki.jp avatar

Name me something that is rude, awkward, or discomfiting generally, I can find people doing it in Japan who are ostensibly Yamato descended and holders of Japanese nationality by birth.

Imagine if I did a video called "WHAT AMERICANS HATE THAT FOREIGNERS DO"

It would rightly be called xenophobic or racist.

God bless the client who, for years now, has consistently mistyped (or mis-spellchecked) “specimen” as “spacemen”.

It doesn’t turn out well for the spacemen, who are usually sputter-coated with a metal, sectioned, and subjected to electron microscope observation.

“There used to be a lower, middle and upper class. Now it seems like there’s an ultra-wealthy class and everyone else is just poor.”

Yep, that's what the West reaped from Reaganomics and "government is the problem" thinking. Don't like it? Too bad, shit's locked in hard. Anything else is "socialist."

@dyckron I'd argue that there has always only been two classes, the capitalist class and the working class. But there was a time when the capitalist class at least felt the need to give the working class the ability to have a decent standard of living, hence the supposed Middle Class. Not so much anymore. The mask is off and as you say, has been since Reagan and Thatcher.

Re-watching Star Trek: Enterprise given the references to it in Strange New Worlds and it is honestly better than I remember.

One thing I really like is how arrogant and duplicitous the Vulcans are portrayed. Between TOS and VOY, Vulcans are largely portrayed positively, their claimed enlightenment taken at their word.

Not so in Enterprise. It also explains some of the attitude that Spock faces in TOS, particularly from McCoy.

What is the stupidest, most dangerous teen shit you ever did?

For me, I am pretty sure it is when at 15, I car surfed on top of my friend's Ford Explorer on a highway going at speed.

Honestly, it is a wonder I didn't fall off and die.

How did I not know that Tenchi Muyo OVA, started in 1992, had its most recent season in 2020-2021, which I haven't seen!

Guess it's time for a rewatch of something I haven't seen in nearly 30 years.

jezebelkat,
@jezebelkat@famichiki.jp avatar

@YamaguchiSake No way. The whole is COMPRISED OF its parts.

"A whole comprises its parts" is backwards.

The parts comprise the whole.

I'm sorry, the dictionary is wrong. At least in my dialect.

jezebelkat,
@jezebelkat@famichiki.jp avatar

Looks like this is a long-standing argument. I always assumed it was a Britishism. I have never heard an American use it differently from me:

"There is considerable evidence of comprised of in well-edited publications throughout the 20th century:"

I have always used it, and I am sure I have used it in academic writing with no pushback at all.

At this point, it is a correct usage, as long as it is understood to be.
