Morning mood: the CNN situation makes it pretty clear that as Canadians, we're going to have to think about what it is going to be like living next to a brutal dictatorship with the disappearance of the rule of law, complete compromise of the courts, and probably mass executions, prison camps, and a flood of refugees coming to our border. It seems inevitable that this is where America is headed. We are witnessing the death of democracy in real-time. The media is once again going to aid and abet it's destruction in a race for ratings

As you might guess, I'm in a pretty pissy mood this morning.

Monday, at 10am est, I'm going to be interviewed by an AI about ... AI.....LIVE.

It should be fun.

It will be pumped out to my LinkedIn, Youtube, Facebook, and other channels. I use to pump these things out to Periscope too but no more. It would be nice to have a Periscope-like service here. (Ya, I've played with Peertube but I'm looking for live video embeds)

Success in upgrading to 4.2.0 from 4.1.6

What I learned:

  • go sequential. 4.1.6 to 7 to 8 to 9 and then .20

  • do server level backups along the way

  • be precise in the steps for 4.2.0. The Mastodon docs aren't very good at outlining the EXACT steps to follow.... you've got to examine several upgrade docs to figure out the process. Personally, I find the docs kind of dumb; why they can't outline all the steps in one doc I don't know

So, in 1994, IBM went into a project with me to film "The IBM Family Guide to the Internet."

We all have those embarrassing moments in my career. This was one. My 'acting' career ended soon after LOL.

This was the opening scene.

Epic!

It's the year 2073.

The Justice Department is reported to be investigating an investigation of the investigation into the original investigation of Donald J. Trump.

Trump, long since dead, fights on through a codicil of his will that appointed a small cabal of close advisors, their descendants, and their descendants, who carry forth the mission to fight, deny and obstruct.

The Confederate States of Purity America honours the annual ritual of the Remembrance of the Burning of the Indictment in a nod to that historical moment of the past, by firing multiple rounds in the air in a nationwide AK47 salute. Several dozens are killed and dozens injured in crossfire.

The United Cooperative Nation of Canada, comprising the original nation of Canada, sans Alberta, but now including California, New York and Washington State, refuses to acknowledge or recognize the memorial day of the Remembrance of the Burning of the Indictment. Instead, they are focused on trying to reclaim the desert tundra around Baffin Bay in an attempt to grow some meager crops for distribution.

It is the year 2073, Donald J. Trump is long since dead, but the legal story goes on. Forever.

I joined Mastodon 6 months ago today. I started out on another instance but soon decided I wanted my own little instance, just for me, because I wanted to commit to it here. So, @jimcarroll

A few things I've learned along the way.

  1. I like it here. I have no intention of leaving.

  2. I like the oldtimers here. It feels like the late 80s / early 90s at times

  3. I like all the new people here. It feels like 2023 and gives me hope

  4. I followed a bunch of random people to start. That filled out my timeline

  5. The timeline is pretty rich and diverse - it teaches me that randomness of insight is a powerful thing

  6. I keep following most people who follow me - some are irresistible follows, and others fit into my 'random is good' insight discovery

  7. I don't follow you if you followed me but don't have a bio/profile! BIO, people - fill it out!

  8. I modified my #selfhost server so I could do 1500 characters! That seems to be a good balance

  9. I think I have learned more about LGBTQ here than I ever knew, and I have deep respect for the community

  10. I only go back to the other site for weather info and airplane geeks

11 . There's also a thriving AI community/news info that I need to get there

  1. I won't shut down my name there because I don't want someone else to take it

  2. I don't post there

  3. I try to engage here as much as possible. Engagement is key.

  4. I try to practice kindness. I remind myself of my "Social Media Serenity Prayer" before I post

Rolled back to 4.1.9. Failed at 4.2.0.

Going to try it again, going in sequence. The docs on the exact process aren't great.

I think it should be in this order.

  • Do git fetch, git checkout
  • do the Ruby update
  • restart processes
  • then go back into su - mastodon and do the final Ruby step?

One of the more interesting trends as we go into the climate crisis is that modern meteorology as we know it is coming to an end.

What's become evident with this winter is that they are all relying on a vast array of sophisticated weather models, but those weather models are really showing no accuracy anymore, particularly in the long-term. So any suggestions as to long-term weather trends are pretty inaccurate. this has pretty big implications going forward

LOL.

The interesting thing about watching a slow and deliberate justice system is realizing that you are watching a slow and deliberate justice system in its final stages of being slow and deliberate before it goes away forever because it is just slow and deliberate.

My bet is there are ZERO trials before the election. America sure as heck has to figure out if it wants to be that shining light on the hill anymore. Odds are it won't.

Here in Canada, we're going to have to figure out what it means when our southern neighbors go full-on dictatorship. Should be weird.

@jimcarroll@futurist.info avatar

It's pretty much a given that 2024 is going to be the year of the Fediverse, , Mastodon and more.

One year ago, I decided I was going to host my own little single-user Mastodon instance in order to control my future here. It's looking more and more like the right decision.

It's a little thing over on Vultr, running Ubuntu. Literally minimal maintenance. Never really any downtime. I follow about 1000 people and about 2000 follow me and no strain.

I spend about $12 a month on it. Minimal investment for a massive return.

The story of how I did it is in my profile.

That's one small upgarde step for a Mastodon server.

And one giant fail for an upgrade.

No luck in upgrading. Saw this in the logs. Trying to upgrade to 4.1.4 from 4.1.0

Any having success?

UPDATE: On me, I didn't do a step upgrade. I should have read the instructions!

UPDATE 2: Success. Had to go 4.1.1 to 4.12 to 4.13 to 4.1.4

Daily Inspiration: "Follow the science behind the future." - Futurist Jim Carroll

So I've spent some time as of late working to understand this whole new world of AI-generated art, diving into platforms like MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and DreamStudio. I must admit it is both wonderfully fascinating and productivity-killing.

I pity my family going forward. After all, they have to put up with stuff like this.

More importantly, though, I have decided that many of the slide decks which will be used for upcoming keynotes will incorporate the AI-generated images that relate to the topic at hand - particularly when I am talking about the AI Megatrends. These are the vast, sweeping transformative trends that go beyond technologies like ChatGPT, and result in dramatic change for mostly every industry.

Next week, I will be spending time with a leadership team talking about the role of AI in the construction and infrastructure industry, and generated a few images to go with the talk: It's not hard to envisage large-scale AI-enabled robotic technologies that are increasingly used within the construction sector.

Likewise, I'll have a few talks coming up about the role of AI in the agriculture industry, and so the science fiction idea of 'weed=zapping robots' is something easily imagined with AI art.

Well, this sucks.

After 3 1/2 years it finally got me.

Not doing so bad. 6 vaxxes, the latest in July. Stuffed nose, cough, tired, aches. But I did my usual walk this morning before I tested. My wife is negative so far.

It's a bummer sine I was supposed to a keynote in San Diego Thursday on AI.

Jim Carroll does his regular 7km morning walk. Feeling off, but not feeling awful. Hoping it clears fast.

My dad was a part of this landing force. Hard to think that 80 years ago, as a 21-year-old, he was throwing his life on the line to defend democracy and freedom. Even harder to believe that there are so many today eager today to take it away.
