Hurl is a language based on exception handling. It’s a real shame that it isn’t tail recursive though.

What if perpetually mending what is perpetually broken is the job of this work, and also this life?

@anthrocypher The fallacy at work here is: because programming languages are finite and simple, the behavior of programs must be finite and predictable.

One of my smoke alarms went off at 5am. I got up and checked around, no smoke smell and the other alarm was chill. There's a button to stop the alarm but it would start up again in a minute. I was on the verge of flipping the other switch that permanently disables it when it stopped. Guess it sensed my murderous intent.

jimfl,
@jimfl@hachyderm.io avatar

@jef This happened to me a while back. When I inspected the alarm, a spider crawled out of it. A couple of internets later, I learned that spiders can, in fact, set off fire alarms.

How many days do you think before Google kills the udm=14 trick? I'm guessing it won't survive Memorial Day.

jimfl,

@middleclasstool The only reason it has lived this long is that killing it would be a backward incompatible change which breaks something revenue-generating.

True story: One time, my employer’s data center was nearly burned down by a machine designed to calculate more digits of a single physical constant. The machine was designed by a man named Christ, and built by his disciples.

It’s like I was in a Darren Aronofsky film briefly.

jimfl,
@jimfl@hachyderm.io avatar

I walked into the data center, and immediately asked the operators near the door “what’s that smell?”

“What smell?”

jimfl,
@jimfl@hachyderm.io avatar

Happily, the machine was water cooled, the fire burned through one of the plastic lines, and extinguished itself.

I imagine the operators would have noticed a Halon dump.

Another possible explanation is that MSFT and GOOG haven’t yet figured out that a lot of online tech conversation has left the platforms they have been monitoring for product feedback.
