Hey, Mastodon … I’m trying to track down an #AppleNewton developer named Stephen A. Cronin.

He worked at #AMD and operated a software company called TapTech based out of Austin, Texas in the late 90s. I’ve managed to contact his former software partner, Francis Preve … but Francis lost touch with Stephen years ago.

Together they released a sequencer program for #NewtonOS called NR404 and I’m hoping the source code still exists somewhere.

Boosts appreciated.

At the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, there are large panels with context and background on his career, and quotes from people like John Lennon and Mick Jagger.

And the attributions for the quotes inconsistently use em- and en-dashes before the name.

And it’s driving me crazy.

This is your goddamned fault, Internet. People weren’t meant to be like this. You broke me.

I don’t think it’s that much of a coincidence that I read this in NetNewsWire. https://coryd.dev/posts/2024/boring-is-good/

Darlings, the number of plugins required to use Neovim is exactly zero.

Somebody should make an OS-agnostic program that searches the hard drive and returns a count of how many versions of Python you have installed

Most products and business problems require deterministic solutions.
Generative models are not deterministic.
Every single company who has ended up in the news for an AI gaffe has failed to grasp this distinction.

There’s no hammering “hallucination” out of a generative model; it’s baked into how the models work. You just end up spending so much time papering over the cracks in the façade that you end up with a beautiful découpage.

One thing I learned from my tiling theory students this semester: Each of the 12 pentominoes can be decomposed into nine smaller pentominoes. Here's a decomposition of all 12 using exactly nine sets of pentominoes. (I believe the configuration is due to Aad van de Wetering.)

In the class, we discussed substitution tilings—repeatedly performing decompositions like this. I decided to give it a try with the pentominoes. Here are zeroeth, first, second, and third decompositions of the p-shaped pentomino.

"Trying to get Steve Reich, James Brown, and John Bonham in the room together" is how Dosh describes his funky new track, "Stone Cold Boogie". This 9 minute jam is what I've been listening to this morning. https://dosh.bandcamp.com/track/stone-cold-boogie?from=butts

I highly recommend picking up the remastered edition of his debut album too.

This morning a polar bear slammed their heavy paw against the wall by my head. I awoke with a start and stared around me for several seconds. I was in my bedroom. The sun was beginning to rise a cool light shining through the trees. Behind my eyes a ragged starving bear with patchy white fur. Furious. I rose from the bed. The dream bear slowly turned into wisps but remained tethered to my spirit.
