What’s up everybody, how are you doing?

I'm working on writing a database seeder for an old handrolled PHP application (where I'm not the original author) and it's been quite the experience - much different from frameworks like Laravel that include mechanisms for seeding as part of the development package.

New NASA site is live: https://www.nasa.gov/

I know several folks involved in the development of this, and couldn't be more proud of the work they put into it. It looks and functions great. Built on to rankle the haters.

it is so goddamn infuriating that bandcamp is now on the inevitable enshitification ride.

@ghorwood The last time I heard news this awful about Bandcamp, it was that Epic had acquired them.

When you’ve been in tech for a decade, every online tutorial feels like a rehash of a million things you already know with one or two useful nuggets buried within.

B/W why am I watching this Laravel tutorial about building a CRUD app on LinkedIn?

jmichaelward,
@jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

Filling one’s knowledge gaps is extremely time consuming due to all the rehash. I just want the things I don’t know yet.

Periodic reminder that when you say you want to be “apart of” something, you probably meant “a part of”. Removing the space conveys the opposite meaning.

    @pch @chris I agree with Seth. As with everything, it all depends. I think LinkedIn is at its best when my feed is filled with knowledge-sharing articles; less so when people emulate how they would behave on other social platforms.

    That said, the platform might mostly feel fake to you because it's widely necessary to have a "business personality" to survive in our late capitalist nightmare. :)

    jmichaelward,
    @jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

    @chris @pch It is hard. A couple of years ago I was doing a bit more technical blogging and I found it to be a good place to share what I'd written in hopes that it gathers some attention. I'm trying to get back to that place now. I think sharing updates about Faust.js is the perfect way to use the platform.

    Tonight, we played Hansa Teutonica at four players and it was really fun. Fast, simple turns and lots of player interaction that doesn’t feel too mean. I’ve been wanting to try it for years and I adored it.

    100 years is a long commitment for someone to say they want that: domain, host, CMS, etc.

    I also wonder if that comes with strings attached like does it lock the WP version or turn it into a static site? And if someone gets it but in 5 years doesn’t like WP would they be able to get a prorated refund? And at what point does the refund option go away? Can a deceased’s loved one request a refund to keep their house? Lots of questions here involving wills and such too.

    Can anyone give me a TL;DR overview about Pest? Is anyone using it instead of PHPUnit? Did you move from PHPUnit to Pest? If so, what made you decide to make the jump, how is it going, and if it's going well, what do you like about it?

    Not gonna lie: I’m looking forward to that day in December/January/February when the reason we can’t or don’t want to go anywhere is because it snowed 15”. It beats 99°F every day of the year.

    @chris No doubt this is obvious, but inflation is the direct result of appeasing capitalist investors. You can't give the proletariat a modest pay bump and satisfy stockholders with endless quarters of record profits without that price increase.

    Spending this terrible AQI Saturday morning brushing up on Laravel documentation, which is long overdue but I finally feel like I have the mental bandwidth to tackle it.

    Also, the documentation reads way easier to my more experienced brain than it did, say, 6-7 years ago.

    jmichaelward,
    @jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

    Seriously, though, take this sentence from the docs:

    "A very powerful feature of the service container is its ability to bind an interface to a given implementation."

    It doesn't make my eyes glaze over now like it would many years ago, but this is not really approachable language for newbies.

    jmichaelward,
    @jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

    Anyone disciplined enough to look up each and every word they don't understand will do well. Scatterbrains like me? My approach was (and still is) to keep reading until eventually I see the same words often enough that I know I need to understand them.

    jmichaelward,
    @jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

    I think it would be awesome if framework documentation linked back to a central resource of terminology to help newcomers more easily understand what they're reading.

    Yes, it might be annoying to experienced engineers, but it might also help bring others up more quickly.

    jmichaelward,
    @jmichaelward@phpc.social avatar

    Okay, some things still make my eyes glaze over. Can anyone ELI5 WTF this means?

    Sorry about all the random toots, but I’m also curious: what are you all reading right now?

    I recently finished Cultish by Amanda Montell (whom I learned was also the author of Wordslut, so I need to give that a look next) and Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. Now I’m digging back into Palo Alto by Malcolm Harris and Imaginable by Jane McGonigal, the latter of which is an excellent guide to mentally preparing yourself for the future.
