joelvanderwerf,

@nwchapman In some respects, that reminds me of the SF State library: a variety of working spaces for different group sizes, and lots of 'em, with talking and eating encouraged (plus a cafe).

"as of last month, bus routes down Market have had as much as 4 minutes shaved off their journeys while ridership is up to 79% of pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, there has been a 40% drop in collisions."

True. Before the closure, I used to feel that I could more or less keep pace on foot with buses along Market.

In the last month, the stats pages have stopped working for me in firefox. Those pages, particularly positivity rate, have been very useful for the last 4 years because you could see a spike starting and take extra precautions until it passed.

I even tried firefox in safe mode to check if the problem was one of my extensions (it's not).

However, the pages do work correctly in chromium.

So, we have to use a google product to know when the next surge in positivity rate begins?

I left feedback on the web site FWIW.

The are surface drifters, like little Portuguese men o' war. Commonly called By-the-wind-sailors. They show up on California beaches once or twice a year, sometimes by the thousands.

Watch out for bait-and-switch signature gatherers.

A guy in Civic Center had 4 measures, three CA and one SF. He presented them in a clever order. The first two were:

  1. extend a temporary measure (I think it had been a good prop a few years ago) to fund and provide senior health care

  2. fund medicine for children.

Both were sponsored by reputable-looking health care non-profits and advocacy groups.

Then he presented a measure that was completely incomprehensible and sponsored by the California Apartment Association (and nobody else). Maybe the CAA isn't always wrong, but it was impossible for me to tell in this case. Nope.

Finally, the SF measure would clearly and absolutely hamstring the ability of the SF government to, um, govern. Guess who the sponsor was. Michael Moritz. Nope so hard.

Be careful who you give your signature to. Read everything.

@kyleve Donald Trump is a walking-shambling--buffer overflow, an unpatched exploit, populated with fragments of malicious code generated in basements from St Petersburg to San Diego

I love these unusual buildings on Sumner Street in the SoMa District of . I can't find much about their history, but there are some good interior shots here https://www.redfin.com/CA/San-Francisco/5-Sumner-St-94103/home/1653809

joelvanderwerf,

@docpop They are by Donald MacDonald.[1]

There's a similar set by him on Hallam St. and another on Shipley St.

If you're interested, there's a local architect (not related to DMD) who knows more about them and SF architecture history in general.[2]

Fedifriends, help me find fun sightseeing and touristy things in San Francisco that are wheelchair accessible.

More context: My in-laws are visiting from the UK next week and one of them uses a mobility scooter or wheelchair (can also get around short distances on crutches). We will not have access to a car, so we have to get around by public transit, cabs, etc.

They enjoy people watching, gardens, birds, hanging out in cafes, and talking to the locals.

So far I was thinking they might like JFK Promenade and the surrounding museums, the Botanical Garden, and taking a boat tour of the bay.

On a meta level, I don’t quite know how to research this so I’d appreciate meta tips as well.

(Boosts for reach most welcome)

joelvanderwerf,

@dys_morphia The gardens at the top of the Transbay center (aka Salesforce Park) are accessible by elevator. There are food vendors, but I haven't been to them. It's a few blocks from SF MoMA.

🎧 When I moved to in January 1990, Paradise Lounge at 11th/Folsom was my local. Pool, $2 Bud in the bottle and the music (live or DJ) was always proper!

were local, the room was always SRO, and regulars knew the chorus to "What's Up" and sang along. The band weren't "famous" yet, and didn't release the record until 1992.

@DemocracySpot I remember going to Above Paradise (their smaller venue) in the mid 90s to see Jim Campilongo and the Ten Gallon Cats. That's still one of my favorite band names.

joelvanderwerf,

@DemocracySpot My memory is that there was a fair amount of noise leaking in from downstairs, so the Cats had to play loud to cover it.

joelvanderwerf,

Joe Esk nails it: "The same organizations and politicians who were happy to indulge in the crime and filth and chaos storyline when it was politically convenient now want to talk about how San Francisco’s violent crime rate is actually lower than most cities and the scenes of misery on its hardest-up streets are both nothing new and not indicative of life in the city writ large. Now it’s politically inconvenient. Now they want to be rational."
