I think this is actually GOOD news about that prize diarrhoea stain Nigel Farage standing as a Reform candidate in the General Election. If anything, the perceived legitimacy of Reform among the kind of people who buy it will split the remaining Tory vote between Far Right and Extreme Right, likely letting other parties into yet more constituencies.

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@mike it means he’s making his play to control the conservatives now, not next election. He’s going to get voted in, merge/take over the demoralised Conservatives, and run as the Tory leader into the next election.

I don’t like it. I think he can win elections. All it would take is for something to make the Labour government unpopular.

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@mike Boris wasn’t our Trump, Farage is.

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@mike Trump didn’t either. He used it as an asset, and so will Farage, because people dont like the establishment. All he needs to do is keep the media focussed on him.

I don’t think he’ll win a general election, but I also don’t want to put that to the test!

Yesterday I needed to record 60 minutes of footage with my Logitech webcam connected to the M4 iPad Pro.

"Great", I thought, "I'll use Camo Studio". (Which is a really nice app.)

But because I chose the Files app as a destination to save the video...I'll let you guess what happened at the end.

I lost the entire recording.

(For context: this never happened with Photos as a destination.)

@viticci here we are in 2024, and our newest computers are still guessing what a file is based on a file extension. It’s just not really acceptable, is it?

Brought your software imprinting post to mind - in a different light!

"At CHI earlier this month: “Is Stack Overflow Obsolete? An Empirical Study of the Characteristics of ChatGPT Answers to Stack Overflow Questions”.

> Our analysis shows that 52% of ChatGPT answers contain incorrect information and 77% are verbose.

> … our user study participants … overlooked the misinformation in the ChatGPT answers 39% of the time."

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@mike @Greta Sure, the problem is that StackOverflow wasn't actually what I wanted, it was just the closest thing available. LLMs provide working examples of code tailored exactly to what I want within seconds.

I feel like there's a weird disconnect in these arguments. I don't expect my LLMs to be particularly accurate. If I asked a human to provide code like that I'd expect them to make mistakes too.

It's about as good as I am, but thousands of times faster and with much broader experience.

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@mike @Greta to be fair, I think I might have mentioned that SA wasn’t entire accurate either, and that many answers were out of date (which is true). But obviously this study is more comprehensive,and I’m happy to accept that accepted SA answers are better than an LLM.

But they also aren’t what I actually want. They are an answer to a more or less similar question asked by someone else. Not working code for my current problem.

LLMs also don’t chide me for an “off-topic” question.

iPad today is very reminiscent of the Mac of the 90s. A bewildering array of models and SKUs, a beloved operating system with core technology issues that severely limit the future of the product line, a dearth of the real apps professionals use, and a strong emphasis on the handful of creative niches it's carved out for itself. Unlike the 90s, though, all of these problems are masked by the success of the low-end. If you split iPad Pro out into its own product category, it would be in trouble

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@stroughtonsmith do you mean it would just be iOS? I can’t really tell the difference anyway.
