Russian propagandists openly say that life doesn’t matter and that it’s an honor to sacrifice it for their country and church. Russians made killing their religion.

Like true fascists, they also advise Russian soldiers to kill themselves rather than wait until they lose their limbs. Their “great” nation doesn’t need people with disabilities.

Been meaning to receive signals from weather sattelites, so I bought a HackRF and an appropriate yagi. However, I now realise...the yagi has a a receive power of 25db, and the HackRF is only rated for 5db. So I need an attenuator.

I'm quite new to RF, but attenuators just involve a setup of resistors, right? So would making a variable one be as simple as just incorporating a potentiometer? or is it a little more complicated than that

So here is a guy cooking a hotdog with a 10kw RF antenna. A bonus is it plays the radio audio as it cooks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgDxXDV4_hc

The antennas near our house are 200kw.

I don't plan on touching them whilst grounded so I'm not too concerned, but I am now wondering if I can just put up an antenna and steal power. Screw solar and wind, our house will be powered by MEDIUM WAVE BABY!

I can say without a doubt of all technically oriented communities the HAM radio community is by far the most rude, hostile, and least educated in their field of any group.

The amount of just pure idiocy and lack of understanding of even the basics is astonishing considering this is a licensed trade.

freeschool,
@freeschool@qoto.org avatar

@freemo Perhaps also on the other end of the scale some of the most technically aware too (so a bit of big gap but equally balanced looking at the extremes?)
I've seen some great HAM users and posts and often thought of you... and I guess I would see the bad ones as they wouldn't be here so yeah hard to say as I don't know but think even a few specialist could outweigh millions of users considering you can pick up and play with things like anything else at some level and then be super-technical on another level - bit like computers I suppose. And I hope I'm not comparing it too wildly or incorrectly but something 'like' that example...
Sticking my neck out further perhaps Truckers and Techies as as way of saying it in too short of a phrase...

Yesterday, around 17:30UTC, the Danish long wave transmitter ‘Kalundborg’ stopped transmitting after 96years of service.

The MW transmitter was taken down and the tower was demolished 10 years ago, but the LW was kept operational at 50kW TX PWR, until yesterday.

An end of an era of almost 100 years AM broadcast in Denmark.

Driving to my friends New Year’s party, I listened to it in my car. Quality was amazing - I don’t think people of today realize how well this actually worked given the simplicity 🎵🙂

As an RF and radio enthusiast this was an emotional moment - I’m sure some of you will understand 🥲

So, something unusual we noticed during the blackout while using our woodstove (which we use only in emergencies). We have an Eco-Fan that pushes warm air into the rest of the house. Whenever we put an LED battery-operated candle near the Eco-Fan, the candle would dim. I'm wondering if the motor in the fan emits some sort of electromagnetic field that interferes with electricity transfer or functions as a dampener. Has anyone else who uses an Eco-Fan noticed this phenomenon?

opalmirror,
@opalmirror@hachyderm.io avatar

@DoomsdaysCW Interesting. You can wrap all but the LED part of the candle in aluminum foil to cancel out most of the electric fields and Radio Frequency Interference, leaving just magnetic effects, as an experiment. If the RFI reduction makes your problem go away then you know it's emitted RFI that causes the effect. If it's still weak you know it's emitted magnetic field causing the problem.

amy, to Electronics

so is RF mixing esentially just doing sample-wise multiplication of two signals through some weird and fucked up nonlinear magic?

I just played around with a fourier transform I wrote and noticed that if I multiply two sine waves I am left with a new wave consiting of the sum and difference frequencies.

Like am I just slow to realize something really obvious?

Learned from another ham radio operator that in some parts of Canada, everyone has a "remote start" button on their keychain, and when one gets stuck in town, it will make it impossible for people to start their cars for blocks. They've started T-hunting the malfunctioning or stuck transmitters as a service to the community.

ai6yr,

"The wide scale jamming affects GPS services in two ways. Sometimes reception of GPS signals can be completely blocked, while in other cases, the GPS signal is spoofed - meaning that it transmits a false location to the device. On Sunday morning, residents of the Haifa Bay area reported that their Waze road navigation system erroneously informed them that they were approaching Israel's northern border. Others in the West Bank reported their phone informed them they were near the Gaza border."

Redoing this poll due to a suggestion by @kilroy_was_here ...

What name do you like best for a non-profit community for Ham Radio? Think Apache incubator but for Ham plus other open-source services and resources for the community.

FYI I have both the dot com and dot org as well as the hyphenated and non hyphenated versions of the below. Please mention which variant you prefer in comments.

So I am starting a HAM community.. Think apache for Ham radio. The idea is to address the state of open source software and standards in HAM radio.

Anyone, particularly open-source devs have any interest in talking to me about this, even if its just to make sure their ideas are considered as I launch... but people who want to help more directly are welcome too.

Found a nice little group of guys, mostly in west virginia who apparently are on 3.803MHz every night 8 - 9pm... it is right in the sweet spot for my antenna (80 meters band i have a limited window where it tunes up very nicely). Happy I found the group so i have something to do. All really clear tonight, s9+10 so very promising. its about a 280 mile contact, which is pretty decent for 80m too.
