ROFL 🤣

SNCF Connect sends you these prompt emails if you break off a search

Why did I break it off?

Because you’ve stopped selling loads of international tickets and can’t sell me a ticket to Mouscron because it’s Belgium 🤪

You're just a few clicks away. Find the best price for your next trip, in France or in Europe. LILLE → MOUSCRON Go sncfconnect With you everywhere Download on the App Store GET IT ON Google Play

Ah. I’m happy to see the is as messed up as Strasbourg 🇫🇷 - Offenburg 🇩🇪

Night time engineering works mean buses replace trains. But they can’t organise a bus the whole way - it’s a French bus to Kehl and a German bus for the rest

Well done! 👍

I always have this slightly uneasy feeling on the Mulhouse - Strasbourg mainline. It’s a regular, old, double track line. With stations for TER trains along it without passing loops. And the TGV is haring along it at over 210km/h.

😡

Bundespolizei at Offenburg checking everyone with dark skin exiting the train from Strasbourg

Also for context: having been pretty much only on French trains the past month, today I’m travelling Ravières - Strasbourg - Offenburg - Berlin, tomorrow Berlin - Büchen - Lübeck - Hamburg, and Wednesday Hamburg - Köln - Paris - Ravières.

A lot of km on German railways.

So rather than slamming Deutsche Bahn (which is a German national sport), I’m instead praising what I miss about DB when I’m in France

While the rest of Europe is wondering how to sell more international rail tickets, SNCF is doing the opposite from 23 May 🙄

@bilginveperk alerted me

Pretty simple international trips like
Paris - Verviers 🇧🇪
Paris - Rastatt 🇩🇪
can no longer be bought!

Paris - Verviers - 24 May nothing
Paris - Rastatt 22 May gives some options
Paris - Rastatt 24 May suggests I go to Lauterbourg close to the border French side

I also don’t buy this “SNCF is only so customer unfriendly because of impending liberalisation”

If that were the case, SNCF would logically go out of its way to keep their customers sweet, to make the case further liberalisation is a bad idea

But no. They do customer unfriendly 💩 like refusing to sell tickets from state railways in neighbouring countries. This can only be malevolence and/or incompetence - it’s not liberalisation forcing this onto them!

2020: NightJet Alliance between ÖBB, DB, SBB and SNCF launched with fanfare https://www.railjournal.com/passenger/main-line/obb-db-sbb-and-sncf-announce-nightjet-collaboration/

So who can sell tickets for the Strasbourg* 🇫🇷 - Wien 🇦🇹 service?

ÖBB ✅
DB ✅
SBB ✅ (although more expensive)
SNCF ❌

    • normally Paris, engineering works means it currently starts Strasbourg instead

Also I’m in Strasbourg tomorrow with an hour to kill because the timetables are crap

I’m going to go to the SNCF ticket office and try to book a ticket to Berlin in June (knowing SNCF now can’t sell it) and see what the official reason they give me is

The “high speed” train Marseille - Bruxelles (that I’m taking as far as Lyon today)

Along its whole route it spends 67 minutes at stops! 🤦‍♂️ #CrossBorderRail

jon, to random
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Totally logical. Not.

My trip Nuits-sous-Ravières to Berlin Südkreuz on Monday is all e-tickets except Strasbourg to Kehl, the section. Just collected the paper ticket at Lyon while passing here.

And yeah, I have a ticket split in Kehl because that’s the only way to get the best price for this connection. Which is also totally logical. Not.

To everyone pointing out trains aren’t good enough (latest today @jmovs & @Sustainable2050 examples), the question is: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

Trains from France to Spain are crap. We know.

Does SNCF care? No
Renfe? No
French Government? Of course not
Spanish Government? No
EU? Very vaguely

I know what to fix. But the people who could fix it have weak or no motivation.

🤔 Hmm. Is this the Marseille police lining migrants up in the baking sun?

It’s here https://maps.app.goo.gl/3FNZowWLpnKsDQw98?g_st=ic

And I’m at Mucem on the other side - this is at the limit of my zoom

Edit: NO IT’S NOT. @MartinJBreen reckons it’s this https://mpgastronomie.fr/evenements/les-dejeuners-de-la-flamme/ and that would fit. It would also explain staff restricting entry.

“Croatia will welcome Europe’s first Centre for Sustainable Tourism”

ROFL 🤣

Your tourism is only sustainable if people can get to places without flying or driving. Given Croatia’s generally awful rail network and poor rail links to many of its neighbours they’ve got a lot of work to do https://www.euronews.com/travel/2024/05/05/could-croatia-be-the-most-sustainable-travel-destination-in-europe-its-tourism-minister-ho

Tomorrow is a extra day

5 borders
Cap d'Ail 🇫🇷 - Monte Carlo 🇲🇨 (last there June 2023)
Monte Carlo Country Club 🇫🇷 - Monte Carlo 🇲🇨 (also June 2023)
Ventimiglia 🇮🇹 - Menton Garavan 🇫🇷 (also June 2023)
Olivetta-S. Michele 🇮🇹 - Breil-sur-Roya 🇫🇷 (never been)
Limone 🇮🇹 - Vievola 🇫🇷 (last December 2001 and it was dark)

First problem: tickets

You can’t get a price for the Italian train on the French section 😡

Trenitalia app also showing no prices

jon, to random
@jon@gruene.social avatar

And what’s going on here?

DB proposes 06:03 La Ciotat - Toulon 06:30, depart there 06:43 for Nice Ville, onwards to Ventimiglia

Smallish station in Toulon, 13 min change should be fine

SNCF Connect confirms each train runs but won’t show me the connection. Is it erroneously insisting I need more than 13 mins to change?

SNCF shows correct La Ciotat departure
SNCF Connect Shows correct departure from Toulon
This is what it proposes for La Ciotat - Ventimiglia - going later
