Reading this book about how birds go to space when its winter from 1703.

https://archive.org/details/anessaytowardsp00mortgoog

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

I went on a first date with somebody today and they recommended this to me and so clearly I am interested in a second date.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Where does everyone go in the winter is such a reasonable question to ask. Bugs lay eggs and hatch, fish swim up or down streams, but birds? They go to space.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

I love how in old philosophical writing ppl had to start by justifying the entire process by which it was possible to know anything. Like you have to build an entire epistemology in every book and it seemed like an obvious need to do so

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Ok so here we go.

Birds go to the moon.
Argument 1: if they didnt, we would have found them

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Argument 2: they show up so fast and everywhere at the same time, so they probably come from above us

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Look, if gravity is real, and it has a limit, then its more likely that they just fly up and out of gravity than they fly around the whole world.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Argument 3: when they come back they taste weird.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Argument 5: if they were hibernating, they should act sadder about it. Instead they are excited because they get to go to the moon.

Typescript is still the most annoying language I've worked with in the nine years I've written software. Not a long time perhaps but still consistently hair pulling.

@jalcine
Omg yes. Me and @raymondwjang are working on a project and using TS bc it would look good on the CV to have some TS experience and its the most baffling, mind numbing experience to even get the project started let alone write anything in it. It took us like two hours the other day to figure out how to import a type from another package and make it a global (working on an embedded browser extension where this makes sense to do)

You wont believe the number of stormtroopers theyre deploying against unarmed students unless you see it. This is just one side: at least 7 police departments with at least two layers at every point of egress, with several layers in back for rear control and rotation. They've got the army out against your kids for having the audacity to do whatever they can to stop a genocide

a wide (~50m?) staircase with maybe 20 rows of cops in full riot gear stare down a handful of unarmed students

This police state is your police state. This police state stands between you and any brighter future you might imagine. This fight is your fight

I saw this feather/lead going around, but didn't realize how widespread it still was – looking forward to AI search for similar-but-not-quite-the-same variants of common questions :FaceHoldingBackTears:

For the record ("Which is heavier, 2kg of feathers or 1kg of lead"):

  • Perplexity.ai, GPT 3.5, Claude 3 Haiku, Gemini: "1kg of lead is heavier than 2kg of feathers."
  • Claude 3 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus, Gemini Pro: "Neither, they both weigh the same."

GPT-4 and Mistral get it right (given how long this "test" has been around, not too impressive, either).

The language models merely mimic the form of plausible text. That is all they do.

UAW 4811's strike authorization vote passed -

19,780 votes cast
ASEs (grad students): 80% yes
Postdocs: 74% yes
Academic Researchers: 73%

This authorizes the eboard to call a stand up strike similar to UAW's autoworkers strike last year. Our initial demands include amnesty for all students and workers who are facing any disciplinary action for protest, divestment from "weapons manufacturers, military contractors, and companies profiting from Israel's war on Gaza," disclosure of all investments, and the ability for researchers to opt out from funding from sources tied to the military or oppression of Palestinians (including a transitional fund for those people).

This strike is in response to our employer first allowing a vigilante mob to brutalize our students and workers, and then calling the police to further brutalize them the following night. Our union is responding to a pattern of employer violence that's as old as unions themselves, allying with police-aligned vigilantes to chill and crush organizing.

Students for divestment at have taken a building and riot cops are staging

https://ktla.com/news/local-news/pro-palestinian-protesters-occupy-building-at-u-c-irvine/

edit: unclear whether riot cops have live ammo or just rubber bullets

jonny,

cops have reached the building and are entering the second floor

jonny,

looks like some people in the building left out the first floor and rejoined the crowd while the cops went up the second floor. smart. take building, cops respond, if you can't hold it escape, take another building, repeat.

another chopper stream, KTLA left to refuel.

edit: nvm this got cut, not sure if there is an active chopper stream
edit2: ktla is back: https://ktla.com/news/local-news/pro-palestinian-protesters-occupy-building-at-u-c-irvine/
edit3: they finally cut back to the anchors and are now cycling back through old footage

i've heard people say that UC Irvine's campus was laid out to prevent demonstrations and occupations and it sure looks like it right now. the camp area is not an easily defensible space at all, all sorts of irregular cutouts for trees so hard to make a line at a chokepoint.

Genuinely wondering how this is a crime. Ethereum is not a currency. This is like stealing 25 million robux or runescape coins

Edit: question p much answered by @modrak_m in this post and replies:
