AI is gonna be sentient one day and you guys are gonna be racist at it. Sad

jovikowi,

@hammoncr

AI is gonna be racist right back. It's baked into the training data. It's gonna be the racistest racist that ever racisted the human race.

Sadly, worshipping tech bros and billionaires is in the training data too.

I used to work on AI stuff long ago and was really, really excited about it. Now, it's just ...

High atop his crumbling architect's tower perched upon a lonesome craggy snarl, Benjamin the architect sat at his architectural desk, poring over his work. There was so much architecture to be done and so few hours in the average lifetime of an architect. He had dedicated his entire existence to the architectural arts and had mastered all of its arcane secrets and yet all of his achievements were a poor salve for the aching loneliness that clawed at his soul. He could architect all manner of improbable fantastical edifices and yet he could not architect the mysteries of the human heart.

As the evening waxed into its sinister modalities, a fine mist slipped in beneath the window sash, curling its tendrils across the rough-hewn stone floor. It was thin and ethereal, like the whisper of a cloud on a moonless night. Benjamin looked up from his architectural work to see a figure emerge from this whispering mist—tall and translucent with spindly limbs and flowing eyes. Benjamin shivered the way tall buildings sometimes do.

It was the ghost of a fearsome fog monster, the creature explained in a voice that sounded like a hollow wind whipping through an abandoned library, in life it had risen from its humble origins as an amorphous entity haunting the Scottish moors to become the marketing director for a major multinational chemical concern, famous in all the world for its preternatural ability to sell novel chemical compounds to unsuspecting businesses and consumers alike. It had been riding high on top of the world, like a penthouse suite at the north pole, until the fateful day that it all came crashing down when it suffered a tragic demise at the hands of a freak Wienermobile explosion, the result of a careless mishap during a promotional event.

"Architect Benjamin," the ghostly specter hissed, "I have chosen you as my instrument of retribution. Together, we shall bring down the mighty Oscar Mayer Corporation."

Benjamin dropped his architect's pencil and sat there frozen, mouth agape, like a dolphin who has recognized its own reflection in a mirror for the first time and has some questions that it doesn't quite know how to formulate yet. At long last, was this what friendship felt like?

It wasn't.

About five years ago while looking for a spontaneous weekend vacation, @KevBot and I searched cheap flights out of Oakland and found a flight to Santa Ana, CA for less than $100 round trip. We’d never been, but it was cheap so we figured why not?

We found a hotel with a nice pool and started to look at the map to see what else was around and we were surprised to find a little downtown area with a lot of restaurants and shops close by, so we booked the flight and hotel.

When we arrived at the hotel, we headed out to the little downtown area only to find that cute area on the map with a lot of restaurants and shops was actually a MALL.

We literally booked a vacation to stay at a hotel that was pretty much by nothing but a mall. Doesn’t matter. Still had fun. 10/10. Would do again.

I'll give it a shot for TOS.

Top 10, plus bonuses:

  • Space Seed. Great episode, plus backstory for The Wrath of Khan, which is my favorite ST movie by far.

  • The Trouble With Tribbles. But they're cute!

  • Mirror, Mirror. The original mirror universe ep. Bonus: The Enemy Within.

  • Amok Time. Spock, amok.

  • Arena. Gorn wrasslin'!

  • Balance of Terror. Those Romulan dastards. Bonus: The Enterprise Incident.

  • The Doomsday Machine. Great ep.

  • The City on the Edge of Forever. Best overall ep?

  • The Devil in the Dark. Personal favorite.

  • The Naked Time. Great ep, much Spockage.

Effective today, Stephen Clark is gone from Spaceflight Now and is at Ars Technica, working along with Eric Berger on space reporting.

Here is Stephen's first Ars Technica article.
