Question about using default router and modem

Is using the router and modem my cable company provided for my internet putting my privacy at risk? And if so, I have heard of openWRT routers but it seems like there’s quite a bit of a learning curve with that but even if I got one would I need a non cable company branded modem as well? Any specifically that anyone here would...

It’s been a long time since I had cable but at the time I bought a modem because I could get a really good one and not paying the cable company’s rental fee for a modem, it paid for itself in about a year or so. I seem to remember that the cable company still took control of updating firmware and such on it, though, to maintain compatibility. So I don’t know if it buys you much from a security standpoint, but that’s also an area where I have no expertise.

(This is simplified and generalized)

In the short term it would be worse for workers. Their employers are only required to make up the difference in pay to the non-tipped minimum wage (the normal minimum wage). With tips most servers are making above minimum wage (depending on the restaurant some servers are making quite a bit more than minimum wage; it can be a viable career for some). If a server had been making more than (non-tipped) minimum wage, and everyone stopped tipping, they would probably lose money since their employers are not required to make up the difference to what they had been earning with tips. Since the federal minimum wage is not a livable wage for most of the population, this would be very bad for the servers.

Longer-term it could make a difference, since those servers would likely start leaving their jobs for better paying jobs elsewhere and the restaurants would have to raise their base pay to compete or risk closing. To some extent we’re already seeing this in some industries. I’ve noticed most of the fast food restaurants (non-tipped) are advertising starting pay close to double the federal minimum wage. If the crisis became large enough Congress might be forced to finally raise the minimum wage.

Making employees rely on tips instead of paying them a fair wage is a bad system. I’m not sure how to end it in a way that doesn’t hurt the employees, though, short of congressional action.

Other than needing a left shoulder bumper (which third-party controllers using this layout for the Switch offer), I think it’s perfect. Massive primary A button with a smaller B next to it and the X/Y buttons on the shoulders of the primary button makes excellent placement to me. It’s extra useful when moving between Xbox and Nintendo since they swap the order of the buttons.

I don’t really know and am not going to take time to look for example articles, but it seems like I’ve seen a lot of stories lately where Microsoft has a lot of ability to track users internally in Windows 11 for better “spyware” for Microsoft’s own financial gain. Largely it seems to be to get people to use more of Microsoft’s paid services that have recurring fees, which will benefit Microsoft financially more in the long run than a one-time upgrade fee.

I can’t say I’m surprised, based on the rumors we’ve been seeing so far, but it is disappointing

I will say for the price my Quest 2 has been very impressive. I don’t currently have a computer powerful enough where I can do PCVR with it, but even standalone is pretty stunning. I think they’re around $300, and sometimes less if you can shop at Costco.

I feel like there’s also been an upswing in anti-Taylor Swift stuff in general. It’s been growing since she started her most recent tour and re-recording older albums where she doesn’t own rights to the original recordings, which has lead to her dominating pop music radio stations and being named TIME magazine’s Person of the Year. The issues of ticket scalping from her tour publicly angered her and led to rumbles of a potential congressional investigation of Ticketmaster and Live Nation’s virtual monopoly over concert venues (which is long overdue). But the backlash really seemed to pick up this fall after she started dating a player in the National Football League and attending as many of his games as her schedule allowed. As one of the top-earning celebrities on earth currently, the cameras would often show her reaction after he had a good play, perhaps more often than they would if it was another family member. She would also be shown again a few other times during the games. I don’t know if it’s really happening, but there have been some reports that Taylor Swift fanatics who would not normally watch football have started watching in hopes of seeing her. All of this seems to have made a lot of people mad, but particularly a segment of conservative men for some reason. There was a conspiracy theory going around shortly before her boyfriend’s team played in the league’s championship game that the whole thing was rigged and that after his team won she would give a speech endorsing Joe Biden for president (never mind that the boyfriend’s team had won the championship last year and four years ago and lost the championship three years ago, making them a dominant contender in recent years). It’s been strange to me how many people I’ve seen who are very vocal about climate change being a hoax are suddenly posting about how much Taylor Swift uses her private jet and how bad the emissions from it are, making them strange bedfellows with climate change believers who also oppose private jet use in general. I’ve also started seeing memes from conservative people about how much they hate her music and would never want to listen to her performance, even though I’m pretty sure some of these people were fans of hers back from her debut as a country music singer-songwriter up until fairly recently, even after she transitioned to mainstream pop. I find the whole thing very strange, like out of 1984 when the war opponent would suddenly flip and everyone insisted they’d always hated the new opponent and loved the new ally, their old opponent.

Passkeys might really kill passwords (www.theverge.com)

Passkeys: how do they work? No, like, seriously. It’s clear that the industry is increasingly betting on passkeys as a replacement for passwords, a way to use the internet that is both more secure and more user-friendly. But for all that upside, it’s not always clear how we, the normal human users, are supposed to use...

Adding onto this, I think the fact that digital still cameras also shoot video now contributed to the market for consumer camcorders disappearing. Again, why spend that money on a separate device if something you already have does a pretty good job?

I think the bigger problem is why is the phone system configured in such a way that anyone can just claim to be calling from a number they don’t own? There should be some sort of authentication protocol built into the system to prove the person calling actually is from that number. Then it would be easier to charge someone for violating the Do Not Call registry. Once I had a call that Google identified as being a small local bakery, but on the other end was someone trying to sell me an extended warranty for my car. I’m sure the scammer’s software just picks random numbers, and it hurts legitimate phone users in the process.

There are several dentists in my area that have the last name of Beaver. They’re all related and it seems like the original one felt like that was too good of an opportunity to pass up on, and subsequent generations joined the family business.
