In high school I took classes on Visual Basic, C++, and Java, and learned some ActionScript on my own, but I wouldn’t feel confident with any of them nowadays. I suppose I could still write a basic HTML 4 page, but CSS was always a weak point and I don’t think either of those really count as programming languages anyways.
This has been one of the quieter technologies NASA has been working on for years now, but it’s really exciting to see how well it’s working! The potential benefits it offers could be game changing!
Barra notes that poor retention for Oculus Go had to do with a few common factors, including user comfort, friction in starting a session when not already wearing the headset, and the social isolation of watching content alone—all of which is true for Vision Pro as well....
I received a Quest 2 as a gift. It is fun playing games, but ends up being very much a solo activity. It used to be possible to use Chromecast functionality to share what the user is seeing with other people, but that hasn’t worked for me in a long time and that seems to be the case for others. That was useful when letting others try the device, but without that VR can be a pretty isolated activity. It would be interesting to try something with other people with headsets, but we’re not paying a couple hundred dollars for additional Quests, never mind thousands of dollars on a Vision Pro.
I like the fact that my Android phone records my location timeline from Google Maps, but the fact that this is stored in Google servers creeps me out....
Wait, this app is free, has no ads, and does not give any info to the developer? It seems like it’s basically a hobby, created by a guy who wanted the app and decided to learn how to code so he could write it himself?
This article feels incomplete. The last paragraph feels like it was building to somewhere, then abruptly ends. The last sentence feels especially odd.
It may be frustrating for NASA officials to have to repeatedly tell the public how it is spending the public’s money. But we have a right to know, and these kinds of reports are essential to that process. My space reporter colleagues and I often have the same questions and want these kinds of details. But NASA can tell us to pound sand, such as the agency did with coverage of the Artemis I countdown rehearsal in 2022.
This also starts out feeling like an ordinary news article but ends more like an opinion piece. It feels like they were starting to build to something, make a suggestion about transparency maybe, but never quite went that far. I think if you want to write an editorial (and this was written by an editor) that’s your prerogative as a publication, but if you’re going to do it than actually put an opinion out there. I’m almost wondering if they started to realize writing that NASA is not being as open and accommodating to the press as they would like would probably not do anything to encourage NASA to be more open and accommodating to their publication, but didn’t want to give up on the article.
I think it’s an interesting observation they’ve made, but it seems like they realized they have to be careful how they cover it and I don’t think they quite found the right balance on it. It’s an unusual misstep from a publication I usually feel does an excellent job on classic print journalism.
Hello! I have a very low mileage, but older car (about 33k miles and it’s a 2011 Chevy Cruze.) I have no real interest in purchasing a new car but I do kind of wish I had some of the bells and whistles of a newer car. We have an excellent local place who can do installations of electronics in cars; I’ve gotten a remote...
What are the new things you’re wanting? Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? I don’t think you can add things like blind spot monitoring/forward collision warning/adaptive cruise control.
I’ve seen dash cameras that claim to have features like lane departure but they’re absolute junk. To have those features work properly with a vehicle requires a lot of specific calibration and design work, and generally uses some small radar systems, which is why they need to come with the car from the factory. Even with a backup camera, an aftermarket is better than none, but an integrated camera with lines that help gauge distance and that turn with the steering wheel is so much nicer.
If those are the features you’re looking for you’ll probably be better off saving your money for a newer car with those features. None of them are necessary, but they can be a nice addition, and especially the safety features you hope to never need them but if you ever do and they save your life or save you from an accident at all, they’re really worth the money.
If you consider looking at a newer car, if you’re able to charge at home you might want to consider a Chevy Bolt EV or EUV. They stopped building them last year, but if you can still find one at a dealer they start under $30k with a lot of those features, and all are available for not much more. Like, the base model has forward collision warning, and if you get the higher trim it becomes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. And now you can get the $7500 tax credit applied right there at the dealer. Even buying used you can still get a tax credit from the federal government, whether at a dealer or private sale, but you might have to wait until you file your taxes to get the money back. I wound up in one for several weeks while my wife’s car was in the shop and was surprised at how good it was, especially considering the price. And charging at home meant my city driving cost per mile was 2¢/mile, while my wife’s Kia Soul was 14¢/mile on gas. The only drawbacks it had was paying to fast charge was more expensive than gas and slow by current standards (an hour), and the cup holder was slightly smaller than most cars. But if you can charge at your home and don’t go on long road trips where you’d have to charge every couple hours it could be an ideal fit.
I do recommend everyone get a dash cam, though. Getting one installed isn’t necessary but can make for a nicer experience. If the shop you like offers them and they fit your budget that’s probably a good option to go with. There are lots of models out there with different features, but really as long as they record reliably and you can get the footage relatively easy that’s the most important factor. They’re generally not going to be able to read license plates beyond a short distance, but if they show that you didn’t run a red light or that you stayed in your lane, that’s really the most important thing in an accident.

Is this the only game you’ve tried it with or do these settings seem to generally be a good starting point with Windows games?
Do you also have the Mac version of Steam installed on your computer? I’m wondering if having the two versions on the same account causes any issues, like if I should install the Whisky version under a different account on my Mac than the main account I use.
There are a lot of people who seem to think offending is all it takes. I think Sam McMurray’s character “Glen” in Raising Arizona, who is constantly telling “jokes” about Polish people being stupid that none of the other characters find funny, is a perfect example of the type.
As an American this is kind of wild to me. Of course, plenty of Americans live in one state and work in another, and I think they end up paying income taxes in both states (assuming both states have income tax), although there may be some deduction available for taxes paid to another state. How does this work for income taxes between the two nations?
Is free coffee at work not common in Europe? Most companies I’ve worked at in the U.S. offer free coffee in the workplace. How that’s offered has depended on the company. Some just have a traditional American coffee pot that runs water through grounds in a filter and it drips into a pot that holds 8-12 cups of coffee, sitting on something to keep the coffee warm. There might be two pots, one for decaf and one for regular. A common source of contention is if someone takes the last cup and does not start another pot brewing. Other companies have offered a Keurig system that functions largely the same way but brews an individual cup at a time using single-use disposable pods. This allows people more choices in coffee styles but is more expensive and generates a lot of trash.
One place I worked that was staffed 24 hours a day had some fancier coffee machines that would grind beans fresh for your cup and could produce several different styles like espresso, cappuccino, mocha, or americano, in regular or decaf. It wasn’t as good as going to an actual cafe, but for free and available any time of day or night it was pretty nice.
It’s a bunch of purported prank calls of people calling the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas (of the TV show Pawn Stars fame) late at night and asking for the game Battletoads. Some were kinda clever.
We usually keep the family-friendly filter on when playing with our daughter and her friend (teenagers) but the answers can often get a little dirty. Out of curiosity we turned it off one time but it quickly went to a whole different level that none of us were comfortable with playing with each other, so we put the filter back on.
I suppose with the right group it could be fun, but you’d probably have to be real comfortable with your friends, and have enough friends you’re that comfortable with. Like, if it was just my wife and me we’d have fun, but that’s not enough players for most of those games.

It is possible to own an expensive sports car and not be a giant prick who is a hazard to others in traffic. But the people who buy an expensive sports car purely for the pleasure of driving are much more likely to take it to a track than be dumb on the street, because there aren’t a lot of streets where you can really experience the car to its full potential.
A really expensive car can make you feel like an amazing driver, but can also very suddenly reveal if you’re actually skilled enough to drive it. A lot more people have the money for these cars than the money and skills for these cars.
