I think that the movies one has watched should be removed from the “movies you would like” category.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 in general, I agree, because there's way too much content. However, considering a few personal use cases where this would be less than ideal:

  1. On a shared account where viewers live in separate households and therefore one household may not have viewed it.
  2. For individuals, like my Mom, who enjoy watching a certain type of movie repeatedly even though they've seen it already.

Perhaps they should just be organized into a single section (with genre sub sections)?

@StillIRise1963 in general, I find the sorting and search on all the streaming platforms to be pretty terrible. At least that's my reason for scrolling for so long without finding something I'd like to watch. They all have a heinous recency bias toward whatever everyone else is watching that just came out. I don't like that at all.

Since things have reopened from pandemic shutdowns, I have been actively pursuing activities from which I derive enjoyment. One of those is going to the theater. I’m lucky to live in NYC and have really taken advantage of seeing shows and live performances to support those communities. I’ve seen quite a roster of shows this year, but saw both “& Juliet” and “Shucked” this week & both were excellent!

If you’re in or around I highly recommend both!

@seachanger I'm very lucky to be here and am trying not to take anything for granted. As we saw already, it could all be shut down in an instant.

we spill a lot of pixels on fedi worrying about twitter. i think facebook is a larger threat. remember 3.5 billion use meta, 455 million use twitter.

meta has infiltrated and unified spheres of participatory society that formerly were distributed across a diversity of organizational structures, including small businesses, public institutions, private communications, nonprofits, etc

imo this is essentially the most consequential and pervasive privatization of social life in planetary history.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger I think this is a "both" situation. The reasons are not the same, but the implications are massive in different ways.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger agreed, though I think it makes sense since many came here fleeing that platform in hopes it would replicate the experience they had there when it was enjoyable, useful etc.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger interesting observation. Can you say more about that? It's not my experience so curious to learn more about the similarities you're seeing.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger ah, okay. Got it. FWIW, that is only part of my experience on FB & part of the reason I took it off my phone. I'm part of several FB "groups" that are work related or for personal/professional interests where there are challenges or other items which require me to check in periodically. But mostly the ads have taken over & between those and the vile/stupid/ignorant political posts/memes from people I know, I'm pretty tapped out. I now engage with a smaller core of my "FB friends".

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger I wish my folks were still using it for connection. Unfortunately, it's not much different than any other platform I'm on TBH. People all pushing content with little engagement.

I finished reading “I Have Some Questions for You” by Rebecca Makkai. I give it a 3.2/3.3 out of 5 ⭐️.

Short version of my TL;DR review is:

  1. It could’ve been shorter.
  2. It was too stereotypical.
  3. It needed another edit/re-write.

Did I hate it? No. Did I love it? No. Was I counting the pages until the end? Yes. If it wasn’t “required” reading for a book challenge book group I’m in, I wonder if I would have finished it? TBH, not sure.

@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger LOL I thought about it long and hard because I wanted to be precise on Goodreads about why it wasn’t getting 4 stars. I couldn’t give it above a 3.5 and be forced to round up, because when I look at the books I’ve previously rated 4, I really liked them! 😂

The more I think about it, I’m actually annoyed that it wasn’t better for me. Though I do think with a great screenwriter (obviously, not Makkai IMO), I think it would make a good movie!

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger that is interesting, especially since I think it would make a good movie. I wonder if her style is more conducive to audio or visual storytelling than written? She used some techniques that didn’t work for me (“you know the one where…” “you know the one with” and TONS of superfluous backstory). I think these techniques might land better in audio format or video. The entire first part of the book was backstory, which would have probably been 15 - 30 min of a film.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger I was really bothered by the “bad guys” all appearing to be white guys (until Geoff at the end) and all the “good guys” (Omar, Alder, Hector) being Black or men of color. It was way too stereotypical for me. Using these tropes weakened the points on me too, at least for me. The story ends the way it does because of the stereotypes & I think missed an opportunity to be more nuanced & thus far more compelling.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger it’s really bad that whole set up of him getting involved at all. His initial podcast idea was “all over the place” & “not fully fleshed out” so then he gets hooked on the idea a white girl is pursuing, until she gets called out by a Black female classmate & then he (perhaps unknowingly) becomes a sort of token scapegoat so the white girl can continue… In the end, the white girl is the “witness” while the Black boy is “the press” when they BOTH did the podcast. Trash.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger some of it was so blatant when reading, I wish she’d included discussion questions at the end. I’m curious to know what she intended with some parts. It might be intentional, but hard to know for sure. In the acknowledgments at the back of the book, it seemed like it took a long time to write because of the pandemic and limited resources. Part of that is what leads me to believe it might need another edit/re-write.

I'm going to attempt to finish reading the book I'm currently reading (about 35% into it) and complete a second book by Monday. This will be predicated upon my ability to get to the beach early & read uninterrupted for the bulk of the day. Wish me luck!

What will you be doing this weekend?

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger currently reading the new Rebecca Makkai book, "I Have Some Questions for You". It's the one required book of a book challenge group I'm in this year. The other book will likely be "Family of Liars" by E. Lockhart because it's due back to the library & someone has a hold on it so I can't renew it. I'm only reading books by Black women for all of the books I've selected for the book challenge though! 🖤😊

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger so far, it's just "okay", but a college friend read it & really enjoyed it. She was the first who enjoyed it. All of the folks in the book group have either hated it or said it was mediocre. I didn't read "Great Believers", so this is my first book by her.

I finished "One Summer in Savannah" by Terah Shelton Harris & thought it was EXCELLENT! I haven't devoured a book like that since Tayari Jones' "Silver Sparrow"! CW the book is based on a sexual assault, not detailed but still.

kameka,
@kameka@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger well that is comforting because I was seeking others who liked this book. When I’ve sat still to read it, I can get on at a decent pace, but I just don’t find myself racing back to it because I’m dying to know what happens next. I’m optimistic after hearing you and my friend both enjoyed it. Will definitely let you know!

Given the governor of Florida's hostile nature toward Americans who are Black, LGBTQIA+, & those who can give birth, I sincerely hope that would consider hosting in another state.
FL isn't safe & is too important an event for these communities.
