The team has grown considerably and a ton of work is going into modernizing Thunderbird and removing a lot of the technical debt from the past two decades.
@killyourfm hmm, that's a great question. I don't know if it would deter them from nearby plants, but when we've grown peppers in the past they didn't seem to get bothered by animals.
I haven't talked much about my day job, but now feels like the right time since I recently moved away from management back into a content + community-driven role at @thunderbird.
As successful as the Thunderbird project is, there's a lot of room for us to improve our community engagement, whether that's creating a more welcoming environment for new contributors OR just being a fun "third place" for our users.
What do YOU think is missing right now? What can we do better? 👂
This is completely unacceptable. I don’t even know what else to say. Too goddamn many dangerous precedents being set in the worlds of streaming entertainment and gaming lately.
Just stumbled into a Linux gaming discussion where a guy had the audacity to say he recently tried many flavors of Linux but can’t find one where all the games they want to play just work.
Predictably, every reply was:
“Well the selection of games I play on Linux works great with my unique hardware & software variables, so gaming on Linux is perfect for everyone and you don't know what you’re talking about."
And you wonder why people go back to Windows. Sometimes it’s the “community.”
@killyourfm In the same vein I also have an issue with people who misrepresent how many games do work. You'll see people who have never touched Linux or used it 5 years ago who still think that basically nothing works. Both extremes are harmful to the conversation
For the past several weeks I've been debating switching to a dumb phone / flip phone (maybe a Light Phone?), but addiction clearly isn’t the issue. What I’m sure of is this: I’m definitely done giving T-Mobile $55/month for something I barely use.
Anyone have good experiences with Mint Mobile in the US? (I do realize T-Mobile recently purchased them…)
@killyourfm I switched from Google Fi to Mint about 5mo ago thinking I'd save some money but Google Fi was cheaper in the long run and I'll be switching back next cycle. Coverage/service wise though, it's fine. No noticable difference from Google Fi that I've found. Although Fi supports data-only sims and smart watches and mint doesn't afaict if that matters to you.
@killyourfm I've been on it for a few months now. Switched from AT&T. Haven't noticed much of a difference in coverage other than actually seeing my phone use 5G—never saw it under AT&T, now it's almost always in use. I always buy my phones unlocked anyway, so the lack of "free" phones that I would have gotten under one of the bigger names isn't an issue. Would recommend.
@bcon You’ll definitely be satisfied having both those playthroughs fresh (and in that order) before diving into Rebirth. You’ll probably also appreciate the ability to (hopefully) play at 1440p/4K 60 are options PS5 lacks.
@killyourfm@tedium@taylorlorenz great article. I wish the author didn’t refer to blog posts as data. They are works. When someone pirates a movie they aren’t accused to stealing data, they are held accountable for the value taken which can represent hours, years or decades of effort. Reselling blog posts for training LLMs is stealing lifetimes of people’s work.
@electranyx@killyourfm@tedium@taylorlorenz While I understand your concern, data is more inclusive of information you may be sharing that may not neatly fit into the “creative work” realm. Think, for example, the comments you make, or the metadata you produce from your usage habits.
I think in this case, a broader term is necessary to capture what LLMs actually take.
