For my fellow Michigan folks interested in birding, the Detroit Bird Alliance has an event going on at D-Bar-A Ranch in Metamora in May. I did this event last year and had a blast- didn't see much but it was still a lot of fun. Well, it looks like my new trays came a little too late for my dill. Unfortunately I think it succumbed to root rot, the plants have turned white. Not the end of the world since I can start more seeds before spring. I'm having a ton of algae forming in the seed starter tray that I need to figure out how to handle before it harms my healthy plants. Tonight or tomorrow I'm going to work on potting up what I have left and hopefully that will save what I've got.

My wild bergamot is sprouting! I'm very excited about this. Bee balm is one of my favorite flowers and one of the first things I grew successfully in my garden when I started it. Adding native bergamot is a big deal for me since I currently only have a red cultivar.

Also, started seeing the first set of true leaves on my marigold sprouts! I'm going to have to figure out my potting up solution soon.

I think I finally convinced my husband that we should get ebikes!! I'm excited. I really wanted an electric car for as long as I can remember, but this feels like the best step for us at this point. We barely drive as it is anymore, so I can't see the need for us to spend $$$ on a newer/replacement car in the near future. Already dreaming of the trips we can take on them vs what we can manage on our regular bikes. #bicycling #ebike

@killyourfm I don't have a ton of advice or experience with herbs but we did grow oregano last year and it seems hard to kill. Probably the biggest thing is just consistency with water and care, because if you get pests or fungus it can very quickly spread and wreck many plants. So try to water around the plants but don't get them wet to avoid mildews/fungus.

@killyourfm oh, and if you have problems with rabbits or squirrels I've had luck with covering plants with cayenne pepper but it has to be reapplied very regularly since it will blow away/wash off.

@killyourfm hmm, that's a great question. I don't know if it would deter them from nearby plants, but when we've grown peppers in the past they didn't seem to get bothered by animals.

I think most people would object to forcing women to wear skirts. Beating up girls who do unladylike things like dancing or calculus. Many can even see how silly it is to tease a boy for enjoying painting more than sports.

What I don't understand is how it isn't obvious that transphobia is the exact same impulse.

There is no "reasonable" amount of transphobia you can tolerate without also supporting rigid harmful gender norms in general. 1/

@deborahh @futurebird it will definitely happen. I've seen cis women harassed using the women's restroom just because they have shorter hair or are flat chested, and that was years ago before trans panic filled the news. I feel so bad for girls growing up with these messages.

@BlackAzizAnansi a relative of mine who never married lived together with her adult daughter her whole life. Never thought anything weird about this until my sister pointed out the age difference between them, that mathed out to mom having her daughter when she was 13. We suspect familial rape but everyone involved and everyone who would have known the people involved are now dead. No one ever talked about this, and most of my childhood I thought they were sisters since they were so close in age.

Playing in a college football bowl game is a bad financial decision for most athletes. But college football bowl games make tons of money for colleges. 10s of millions of dollars. 🙂🙃

As a college athlete, if you get hurt in a bowl game, you could end your chances at getting drafted. And during the period when bowl games happen, athletes should be preparing for the "NFL Combine," a fitness test that can result in you getting 10s of millions more in pay.

So many players opt out of Bowl games.🤷🏿‍♂️

I'm usually full of cute* little "I told you so!"s and "I called it!"s about US elections, but not this time. I did not see that Hamas might do a massive terror attack. I did not see that Dem self-own mishandling and callous words and actions in the immediate aftermath, would put Michigan in play for 2024.

Michigan has 16 electoral college votes, and was barely Blue in 2020. That's a 32 point swing.

And this cascades outwards: GOP can now focus more effort on other swing states.

What is putting Michigan in play? The Michigan GOP is bankrupt. Traditional donors are refusing to fund the party because Karamo is a nut. There is enormous infighting happening at the state level (literal fighting with multiple fistfights at party gatherings).

People love the UAW strikes and when Trump visited he visited a non-union plant. Meanwhile Biden and Whitmer both visited the real picket lines. Whitmer has been pushing for the release of Michigan hostages in Gaza. The Dems have been codifying abortion rights which is largely what led to the complete state flip last time.

Even if something put Michigan in play for them, the GOP still needs tons of money to run here because again- they're currently bankrupt, and it's unclear the state of GOP super PACs in the state.
