This @briankrebs story is so wild

“As detailed by researchers at Radware, NoName has effectively gamified DDoS attacks, recruiting hacktivists via its Telegram channel and offering to pay people who agree to install a piece of software called DDoSia. That program allows NoName to commandeer the host computers and their Internet connections in coordinated DDoS campaigns, and DDoSia users with the most attacks can win cash prizes.”

The story goes extremely deep on Stark Industries, a UK company serving as a global proxy for Russian attacks, not to mention global criminal enterprises. Totally fascinating.

That Jackie West debut album that just dropped is very beautiful.

One reviewer mentioned the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions and I was like o shit you shot me in my magical glowing weak spot

anyway I know Mastodon largely doesn't care about music but it's great

Edit: I have given offense to music fedi, lol, sorry

@jsadow It will, if I get my way

@kjhealy freezing like a raccoon in a flashlight beam, covered with unspooled cassette tape

kissane,

@bobjonkman totally sincere, I post about music and generally get crickets, which is fine, I like crickets

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@bobjonkman In this case it’s probably less about who I follow and more about who follows me, I think? Usually almost no one replies when I post about music, so I do it pretty rarely here. But you’re right in any case, it’s the Mastodon I see that I’m talking about.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@bobjonkman (It’s also fairly likely that the kind of music makes a difference.)

@evan I feel like West has an incredible career ahead of her given this debut!

Man, the Open Collective Foundation dissolution emails continue to be the worst and most needlessly hostile vibes. Pulling the rug out from under hundreds of great tiny vulnerable projects while speaking to them like a power-tripping schoolteacher is really something.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

I just cannot understand the thought process behind "Let's treat everyone we're fucking over as though it's their fault for being such naughty children." Wild.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

Obvi subjective! But like…maybe you could spare a moment for idk, a salutation? A recognition of what is happening to people? Rather than leading with:

"As noted in our dissolution FAQ, exit plans for all remaining collectives were due by April 1st. Please update us by email at [redacted] if you have submitted your Exit & Unhosting Review Form, but have not provided the necessary documentation for us to move forward."

Just zero humanness in any of this mess.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@leapingwoman I wouldn't make that leap myself because I am largely talking about tone, but also there's just been no expression of, like, hoping things work out for the projects they're stranding? It's all been incredibly cold and punitive or else publicly accusing Open Collective Inc of being bad communicators for actually trying to ease the burden.

My own stuff will be fine but I've talked to plenty of people who are really struggling.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@fraying There's also a real strain of condescending stickler behavior in nonprofits, more broadly. I recognize that I'm just Mad at Everyone this week but come on!

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@darius @fraying lol simulpost

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@darius THEY PUT THE FIRE EMOJI IN THERE

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@ericshead I recognize that there's considerable variation in communication styles and preferences, but specifically when you've just done a bunch of damage, it feels so wild to me to not a.) apologize and b.) approach the people you've messed with with as much genuine care as possible, along every axis.

And to be clear, I'm not after, like, insincere small talk, but real care backed by demonstrated and extraordinary effort at repair.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@fraying @darius It is very confusing over there

Hey it’s that time again.

The contention that using high-filtration masks to prevent transmission of respiratory disease is “unscientific” and “lacking evidence” when we have reams of aerosol and transmission studies is a display of either unawareness/scientific illiteracy (super fixable! non-shameful!) or of an intentional disregard of the evidence for emotional or ideological reasons (common but troubling).

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@raph I appreciate that—I think there’s a whole lot to unpack in the wider debate, and we’ll be doing it for years and years 🙃
