I went to the aquarium today and there was a guy in a wetsuit pushing a penguin around on a box, back and forth through the water

someone asked why and he says, "yeah, she kinda just really likes riding on the box"

I'm still not over it y'all

Sliding back in to askโ€”do you know without looking it up what "context collapse" is and where/how it entered the conversation about online sociability?

Many thanks, and boosts are welcome <3

I'm excited to be speaking at All Things In Moderation, happening May 15-17. The event is based in Australia, but talks and panels will be recorded so North Americans who want to participate don't have to worry about missing middle of the night sessions!

And the best thing is that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Kenyan Content Moderators' Union

My "day job" is working at the Flickr Foundation helping nurture and grow Flickr Commons. We're approaching an important milestone, re-opening the doors to Flickr Commons, a collection of photography collections all of which have no known copyright restrictions.

It's been around since 2008 and is comprised of nearly two million photos. Do you work for a GLAM institution that might want to be part of it? If so, please read our main post and send us your details. ๐Ÿคฉ

Okay, so, remember how I had some big news? Well, I didn't get to announce it yesterday as I was unwell (I've been unwell most of the month and could really do with extra financial support right now!)

The big news is that my FIRES project has been granted funding by NLNet (@NGIZero) Entrust fund.

What is FIRES? It's a project I've been slowly working since September last year, and provides a server for maintaining and distributing moderation advisories and recommendations.

I made a new Mastodon bot, called "I Hope This Email Finds You.โ€ Twice a day it proposes a novel way to conclude that sentence. (It uses phrases from Google Books that include the phrase โ€œfinds you.โ€) I've been having fun reading these, so I turned it into a bot because you, too, might have fun reading them. https://botsin.space/@thisemailfindsyou/112295528875440987

A few weeks back I encountered a FOSS guy here explaining that when he sees open source devs ask for money, he blocks them and then stops using their code because they're morally wrong and he only wants to work with tools made by people who are doing the work for the right reasons. (I'm paraphrasing to avoid indexing the post.)

I've resisted writing about it because I'm slammed, but the question I can't shake is: Who benefits from the ideology of "pure" volunteerism?

"If you ask ChatGPT the most basic questions in Ethiopiaโ€™s two most popular languages, Amharic and Tigrinya, for example, it produces a nonsensical jumble of Amharic, Tigrinya and sometimes even other languages, @asmelashteka said. But Hadgu, who created a start-up focused on using machine learning to translate between English and Ethiopian languages, said that specific projects like that of RobotsMali also speak to the potential of artificial intelligence."

Really happy to share https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-research-design/ !

Back in 2020, during grant-funded work on the next-generation pip resolver, @sprblm did fascinating user experience research & design work. https://pyfound.blogspot.com/search/label/pip

They wrote several useful documents that took a while to get merged, but now live in pip's documentation! Like:

how to design a survey https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-research-design/guidance/#designing-surveys

how users think pip should react to dependency conflicts https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-research-design/research-results/override-conflicting-dependencies/

security practices https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-research-design/research-results/users-and-security/

The thing I want to shout from the rooftops is: THIS IS POSSIBLE.

projects can hire UX experts, who gather quantitative & qualitative data, and who then recommend specific choices. Maintainers don't just have to guess how to design good, usable features and interfaces.

Yes, even for command-line tools.

Yes, even without a big company running the project. We got grants: https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2019/12/moss-czi-support-pip.html

And toolchains can pool resources to invest & learn together! https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2023/user-support-equanimity-potential-cross-project-tools-practices-open-source/
