"Sunak says it was a mistake to ‘empower scientists’ during Covid pandemic"

Would Sunak have had Johnson and Hancock guessing their way through the pandemic rather than being informed by scientists?

It would have turned out even worse than it did.

Remember, as he takes the stand today, that Rishi Sunak had a huge influence on many of the UK's disastrous pandemic policies, including the delayed first lockdown which cost 10s of thousands of lives.

Don't forget, it was Rishi Sunak who invited fringe scientists to Downing Street in September 2020.

Their advice (and his efforts) convinced Boris Johnson to delay a second lockdown.

The consequences as we now know, were catastrophic.

"Rishi Sunak rejected advice from Professor Chris Whitty that workers should be paid to self-isolate during the pandemic to limit the spread of the virus."

This is something we at

@independentsage advocated strongly for.

"We’ve seen Rishi Sunak argue that scientists were given too much power in pandemic decision-making. This is part of an ongoing narrative that seeks to shift the blame away from the government by depicting it as beholden to all-powerful scientists."

According to Vallance - in a meeting Rishi Sunak (then chancellor of the Exchequer - Cx) claims "It is all about handling the scientists, not handling the virus".

Further emphasises the importance of the independence of those providing scientific evidence to the government.

PPE was on average 80% more expensive when the government bought it from firms referred through a special “VIP lane” by Conservative ministers, MPs and officials, new information has revealed.

Could Johnson "Follow the Science"?
"It’s unfortunate that, at a time when we most needed a leader who would make the effort to understand the scientific evidence in this overwhelmingly science-dominated crisis, we were lumbered with Johnson."

Boris Johnson claimed his government did all they could to protect the British public.

It simply isn’t true

They locked down late in March 2020.

They did it again autumn 2020.

They failed to act in December 2020 when we knew we had vaccines coming.

Unforgivable.

THE DEAD CAN'T HEAR YOUR APOLOGIES.

The messages spelled out by the bereaved family members who stood up, each holding an A4 piece of paper, and who were asked to leave the inquiry on Wednesday morning.

All the evidence we've seen so far in the inquiry paints a picture of a highly toxic atmosphere inside Johnson's government.

How he failed to notice that is beyond me.

Johnson’s on describing Long Covid as "bollocks".

"I regret very much using that language and should have thought of the possibility of a future publication"

Sounds like he doesn’t regret what he said, just the fact he got caught saying it.

“Do you think Boris Johnson is generally trustworthy out not trustworthy when it comes to what happened during the Covid-19 pandemic?”

Harrowing testimony and righteous indignation from @doctor_oxford

It seems he still doesn’t believe they were doing anything wrong.

“Boris Johnson was accused of “shocking disrespect”after he claimed it was unfair to have expected him to stop parties held by “hard-working” aides in Downing Street during lockdown.”

He knew all along that he’d broken the rules too.

Expect more of the same at the Inquiry.

Don't believe the narrative the Boris Johnson will try to push today at the inquiry that he "made the right calls" with covid.

He definitively did not:

  • >230,000 UK citizens died

  • Covid positive patients were sent back to care homes

Final @independentsage.bsky.social briefing today.

Note the change of time. We are starting at 13:00 and going on for 90 minutes.

Hope to see you all there.

If Matt Hancock, today, carries on defending the myth that he "threw a protective ring around care homes" then we will be sure of precisely the extent of the contempt he has for the UK public.

kityates,

Our advice was largely in line with SAGE and indeed we drew frequently on the advice and evidence of the the excellent scientists working for SAGE.
Primarily we wanted transparency in communication, which we felt was not being offered by the official government committee.

kityates,

Our @independentsage.bsky.social timeline, charting the key behavioural science recommendations from SAGE & Independent SAGE, shows much alignment - as well as what was (not) implemented by the Westminster government.
