After three days of various medical appointments, including an at-home-blood-draw, I'm seriously looking forward to tomorrow.

I get to go visit the Yayoi Kusama installation at SFMOMA, and lunch, and more art....more and more art! Yes!

What is the more general discussion, like outside of Mastodon, about Microsoft Recall travesty?

I recognize that who and what I read is heavily influenced by data-safety-ethics-rights and so on.

Are average computer users aware of the dangers?

As a recovering Cancer patient, having Microsoft track my interactions with my doctors....ummm..NO!!!!!!

It's going to be hard enough to get my insurance to actually cover my care without that.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

By the way, my family's monthly health insurance payment is around $3,500 an month. And our deductible is what? Twice that? I need to double check that.

But it's insane. Even with Obamacare, it's still insane.

And the insurance company gets to override what my doctors say should be part of my recovery care.

@kristinHenry part of today's stand-up meeting was people on my team asking me which Linux distro I use on my home desktop/laptop because people know I don't use Windows

I asked what caused the question and it was Recall which caused those that heard the news to get others who hadn't to understand the implications of it.

I'm just so happy to be alive, and that I might actually be Cancer free. Yeah, yeah, more tests before it's sure....but I might actually be cancer free now!

So, if I'm even more socially awkward than usual, please forgive me...and celebrate with me!

Even if it turns out I might actually need Chemo....I'm gonna focus on the recovery I'm in now.

Plus, seems like everyone in my medical care team keeps saying things like "You're young!"

After working in tech, and being a woman-over-30 in the world in general....this medical perspective on my age is ....ummm...liberating and empowering!

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

Like, in the public sphere, there was the brief moment when I was the perfect age. Then I became an invisible old-hag.

Really, it's so refreshing to get the medical perspective of my age...that I am not old.

That part of my cancer recovery is to be thriving again.

Watching John Oliver's show, and that photo of Nancy Reagon on MrT's lap...and my kid says "WTF?!"

I reply quietly with "Yeahhhh, the 80's were weird."

Editing to add: my kid just turned 20. Not a little kid.

Part of getting the new community instance (datavis.social) up and running was deciding on my profile header. I went with an IterativeArt piece I created with code and the text "F*ck Cancer".

I started working on this piece in the days after my diagnosis but before going in for surgery. Even with my frustrations and scary emotions about Cancer, that I was feeling at the time, I still wanted to make the piece beautiful. As usual :)

It's that time again...I gotta get to work on my Maker Faire and SF Zine Festival applications, and cross my fingers that they accept me.

I just finished my SF Zine Fest application. Crossing my fingers that they choose me, because I had such a wonderfully lovely time at last year's.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

Oh wow! I don't know why I haven't thought of this before. But I'm thinking about making a zine about my project

Confession: I only recently started watching Girls5eva.

Another Confession: I watched it all, loved it all! So good!

Hoping for a season 4!

I sure wish I could see this amazing aurora, but the fog is rolling in over Twin Peaks, and it's still unlikely that it will be active by the time it's dark here? It's not likely.

I'll still go outside, just in case, after dark tonight.

@kristinHenry If you can do a long exposure with your camera, you might record more colour than you see with your naked eye.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@CStamp it's solid San Francisco fog, which I normally love.

I'm happy to at least have seen a little hot pink in the fog :)

Hey vis.social folks!

I've been working on a new community instance for the past few months. It's still a work-in--progress, but is ready for a slow opening.

So, if you feel constrained by the on-topic nature of our Local Timeline here on vis.social, or you don't want to CW your posts that mention AI tech, you might be happier on the new instance: datavis.social

Can you stay here on vis.social and ALSO have an account on datavis.social? Yes!

This is an experiment and demonstration that a CW can be added to single post in a thread.

In this post, I'm not using a CW, but am going to add one to a reply to this.

18+ kristinHenry, (edited )
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

Yep, I was able to add a CW to this mid-thread post, without having to CW the whole thread.

kristinHenry, (edited )
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

And yes, I can reply to my CW'd post in this thread and post this one without the CW.

This is seriously cool!

It gives us such granular control over how we post and what we read.

Dear StackOverflow,

You can't ban me from your platform, because I've never felt safe adding my knowledge there (being a woman who codes).

But it's been an invaluable tool for me, for years, to quickly find the code solutions I need...usually small details and quirks in various libraries.

Now? What on earth are you thinking?!!!! Why partner with OpenAI?!!!

Yeah, I get that the sweet-abundant VC money is hard to resist....but seriously? WTF!!!!

Hey vis.social folks!

We could use some more help on our "part-time" moderators team.

Academics, Artists, Creative Coders, and more! We seek diversity of fields and backgrounds.

Especially if you're up to date on current AI tools, so that it's easier to spot posts on our Local Timeline that should have a CW.

Here's our application form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeCflISwvcYXOtAxEhRlI80xLPdoIUy2j1_GGW0Mg8rofRUJQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

janeadams,

@kristinHenry is the intention to auto-flag posts based on keywords? Because I'm curious to know where the line is drawn with respect to the AI CW policy: is "linear regression" something that should be tagged as AI? "Principal Component Analysis"? "Dimensionality reduction"? "Binary classifier"? or is it specifically about the tools that are owned/created by companies like ChatGPT, MidJourney, HuggingFace APIs, etc. In the former case, I worry that this restricts a lot of solidly on-topic work

A lot of Generative artists, like myself, have struggled with the whole hype taking over the term.

Some folks have suggested "Procedural" and just completely dropping the term "Generative". Which saddens me so much, and it doesn't really speak to me somehow.

Right now, I'm leaning toward "Iterative" for my art. It works for both my code-created pieces and my hand drawn pieces...well, it works in my brain. :)
