I keep telling myself that I will never break down and add the following to my .bash_aliases file

alias mdkir=mkdir

But it's so, so tempting.

l13u7anant,

@ovid @luap alias vim=emacsclient --alternate-editor=vim

As much as I hate to admit it, might actually be lighter and faster than on Linux in the .

It can even run Office365+MS Teams on just over 3GB RAM total use.

(merit for that being of Debian for the efficience, not MS's)

l13u7anant,

@kzimmermann @tripplehelix Interesting. What don't you like about the RaspiOS? I pretty much have never used anything else, but Ibwonder if there are better OSs.

I am saying this in the nicest way possible, COSMIC has a great dark theme but this light theme needs to go back in the oven and cook a little longer, it looks like an out of date theme where component names have changed and now colors are being applied to the wrong things

l13u7anant,

@BrodieOnLinux Sorry mate, but I can't really tell the difference here. Maybe the code highlighting and the terminal colors is where there most difference can be seen.

Adblockers are legal, German courts ruled. Their argument: users not only have the right to receive information but also to refuse it.
That sounds about right. It'd be positively dystopian if companies can claim the right to force-feed information. A win for internet user freedom :).
One of the downsides of the ruling is that a company can exclude users with an activated adblocker from accessing its website.
@fsfe wrote an interesting article about the case
https://fsfe.org/news/2023/news-20231220-01.en.html

l13u7anant,

@NGIZero @fsfe
"..the court nevertheless preserved Axel Springer’s right to exclude users with an activated adblocker from accessing its content. This can be understood as an approval on the use of adblock detection tools by companies like Axel Springer"

At least they won't we able to go after adblock devs.

i have this long term project I've been slowly thinking about for years to figure out how to help folks get more comfortable on the unix command line.

I have this sense that there are a lot of people who have been using the command line for 5-20 years but still don't really feel at home there

(not looking for advice, it's just something I'm thinking about)

l13u7anant,

@bonoky @b0rk Wow, I never would have guessed that one could use linux for that long without getting good with the shell. Changes my perspective a bit.

It's not uncommon for users to accidentally create a file that starts with dashes. However, when you try to remove such files using the rm command in / , the system may consider them as command-line options, leading to an error message. To delete a file with a name starting with a dash character, follow these steps https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/unix-linux-remove-strange-names-files/

l13u7anant,

@nixCraft I once created a file called '-rf /' a long time ago, and I still have it, cause I am too chicken shit to type any rm command to remove it.

Fun times, the latest Kdenlive is completely broken, it duplicates my main audio track deleting all of the other tracks, I guess we're back to holding back this package

l13u7anant,

@BrodieOnLinux Yeah, I've had many issues with both kdenlive and openshot in the past, including random crashes. I recently tried the Blender video editor, and for a noob like me, it's quite good.

"Can I use the GPL for something other than software?" It's an interesting question. There's an answer on the page. Read it here: https://u.fsf.org/3x4

l13u7anant,

@fsf One question I have about the GPL is if the license needs to be updated to ensure that LLMs such as GitHub copilot, ChatGPT, etc would either be restricted from using GPLed code from their training sets, or they have to also be released under a GPL compatible license.
