lemmyreader,

Not sure if this would work for you but this app Podcini is new on F-Droid, and BBC is mentioned.

Podcini is an open-source podcast manager and player that allows you to subscribe to any RSS feed, gives you instant access to millions of free and paid podcasts, from independent podcasters to large publishing houses such as the BBC, NPR and CNN. Add, import and export their feeds hassle-free using the Apple Podcasts database, OPML files or simple RSS URLs.

Download, stream or queue episodes and enjoy them the way you like with adjustable playback speeds, chapter support and a sleep timer.

lemmyreader,

Blog post looks neat. So, Emissary is build with Go with a bit of JavaScript and MongoDB. Promising project.

lemmyreader,

I’ve edited this post and linked to the original on Mastodon.

lemmyreader,

Thanks!

lemmyreader,

Don’t git rm the messenger /j Meanwhile here’s some more text in Julia’s blog jvns.ca/blog/2024/…/notes-on-git-error-messages/

Differences between Kali ISOs?

Hi, I would know what are the differences between the vm-designed Kali Linux ISO and the “normal” one. Yes the vm-designed one is as “vm ready file”, already configure and all the stuff… but what are the real differences, for example it says on the website that the vm one is isolated, but is this already not the case...

lemmyreader,

Vagrant is software which can make it easier for developers to create test environments and work with that. Some people love it.

lemmyreader,

Some software is brand new and not yet packaged as software packages. And for already existing software Linux distributions will have to make choices as not everything can be included and maintained. Now if a developer creates new software, and things are not packaged yet (With Debian for Debian stable this can take a really long time) it can be comfortable for the developer to provide just instructions about how to compile the software so users can run the software, while the maintainer does not have to bother about packaging.

lemmyreader,

Yes, indeed. If you would want to you can re-compile Debian deb packages from Debian sources. To give you an idea : wiki.debian.org/apt-srcThere’s also Gentoo Linux which has a history of compiling software. Years ago that was interesting because of flags for compiling, make the resulting software optimized for certain CPU models.

lemmyreader,

The Arch Linux makepkg is a bash script with description

make packages compatible for use with pacman

Some packages of AUR are not about compiling but fetching the binary (sometimes converting it from deb) and then prepare it for you so you can install it. So when you use AUR to install a binary package instead of compiling there is really no compiling involved afair.

lemmyreader,

I see. What are you optimizing for ? A smaller and faster kernel, or optimizing for certain CPU or certain other hardware parts ?

lemmyreader,

Surprising plot, not bad. Thanks for posting.

And let’s put some background music with it. youtube.com/watch?v=AZKcl4-tcuo

lemmyreader,

Good :-) Finally people can index search and read back answers to questions for all the open source projects that only used Discord for communication (Like SerenityOS and many others).

lemmyreader,

Yes, some parts of the world are alienating human beings :( I think I’ve read about bike friendly areas in the USA. Here in Europe I guess the car culture is different, though I saw newspaper articles that this year the sales of new cars include more than 50 percent SUVs :( Public transport or bike or walking is what I use and I am happy about the trains but sometimes they’re so full of people that it is no fun and a bit of suffering. But … car free areas and bike lanes FTW!

lemmyreader,

Thanks for the edit, and thanks @glitchdx for commenting.

lemmyreader,

How did Google manage to buy YouTube, and then make YouTube the video monopoly it currently is ? One of the pillars of that foundation is open source software used by Google, for free. Some of that open source software maintained for a long time by unpaid and sometimes burned out software developers. All the YT video watchers commenting here in this post wanting to pay content creators and wanting content creators live off that : Google is run by a few laughing billionaires who probably care most about shareholders and being able to make more money by exploiting ads on the billions of hooked end users. Besides paying YT and content creators consider supporting small scale open source projects as well. Help out wherever and whenever you can with open source software. Take back your digital sovereignty. Big tech is not your friend. Open source empowers and shares with others as in sharing is caring.

lemmyreader,

Are you using Ubuntu Long Term Release or not ?

  • I’m subscribed to Ubuntu and Debian announcements via email, and I see much more often Linux kernel updates for Ubuntu than for Debian. It makes me wonder whether the Debian kernel is slimmed down, and that Ubuntu is focused on Enterprises with their kernel.

Email service that integrates well with Thunderbird?

I hope I’m not annoying you kind folks too much with my ongoing Tutamail woes, but, in the long slow process of divorcing myself from them (and returning to Thunderbird), I’m looking for an email host/provider that integrates well with TB, meaning that it can sync mail, contacts, calendars, and tasks between the Linux...

lemmyreader,

Thanks.

p.s. To everyone out there. Remind me when the Proton mail app without Google push has landed in F-Droid.
