Folks: I'm going to say something potentially controversial in the world.

The Prusa MK3S is a mess from a software perspective.

I didn't say it was a bad printer, by all accounts, it's pretty amazing printer. But looking at the code? Wow, it's not well-written software.

For those of you who don't know, it's open source hardware (GPL3) written (mostly) in OpenSCAD. You can find it on GitHub:

https://github.com/prusa3d/Original-Prusa-i3/tree/MK3S

Let me breakdown the problems with it:

Welp. It's official. is no longer

While I wasn't a contributor to the core, I presented on it dozens of times, talked to thousands, and wrote a book about it.

I probably wouldn't have done any of that with that kind of license.

Very disappointed.

I have a problem.

I tend to hoard failed or test prints.

I should just throw them into the recycle-this-PLA-when-I-figure-out-how box, but instead they stay on my desk because they're just interesting shapes.

One or two is fine, but I realized i have dozens littering my otherwise tidy workspace. 🤦‍♂️

My latest filament haul! This is the order from filaments.ca.

I had a vision for a project that needs a lot of earth-y toned filament but I didn’t have much in my hoard.

The same project needs to be a little more temperature and impact resistant than PLA, so I’m going deep on PHA.

That PVB just slipped into my cart because it was close out. Don’t judge me.

A roll of PHA clay coloured filament in my hand.
A mini spool-less roll of white PHA held in my hand
A 500g roll of pvb neon green filament held in my hand

Is end-user really persistently lower quality?

I guess it comes down to your definition of “quality”. I think of “quality” as “not going to fall to bits.” I would guess has a much better track record than commercial/proprietary.

If you think of “quality” as fit/finish (also ease of use?), then maybe end-user oss falls behind. Perceptions of that are usually a result of single-minded curation & vision, the opposite of collaboration

This looks like an interesting project and I love the idea of a DIY-able filament changer.

However, despite the what the creator of the project say in the video or the title, it's not actually open source, it's CC BY-NC-SA, which is incompatible with open source.

The conversation around and needs to evolve beyond calling everything not closed/proprietary "open source".

With the smoke in this weekend, I pulled the air purifiers up from the basement.

Does anyone know how the filters work for these? As in is there some sort of standard or does each manufacturer make unique?

I have a couple of Instant (as in Instant Pot) brand filters and they work well. But filters seem to be stupid expensive: 55CAD per filter. I think the original purifier was only 80CAD.

There similar looking/sized filters for half the price, but not sure if they'll work.

How do you feel about recorded demos of software?

I need to give a demo of some software this week. Typically, I like to give a demo well... live.

This software runs, in the best case scenario, in something like 8 minutes but it can take much longer (non-deterministically). It's fast for what it's doing but still slow clock-wise and very dull to watch.

I'm considering recording it ahead of time, but I know people in this industry are skeptical by nature and pre-recording looks fishy.

One of the criticisms of levelled by manufacturers in the space is that it creates copy-cat hardware. The story goes that Ender 3 and Prusa MK2 resulted in other manufacturers "ripping them off."

BambuLab famously isn't open source (at least with hardware or firmware). So, you'd think that, given the logic that it isn't open source there wouldn't be clones, right? Right? Hmmm.. Two Trees SK1, Creality K1, Frozen Arco (and, and..)

Okay. I have an interesting material problem:

I need to print some brackets that will be covered by coarse rock outside. It won’t be exposed to UV, but it will likely need to be rigid from -40c to +30c.

It’ll like spend some % or the year wet, submerged, or frozen in ice.

It’s very likely to be exposed to regular impact stress.

I’ve seen PLA practically explode at -40c with a tiny impact. Maybe PETG? I know people swear by TPU outdoors, but the moisture makes me doubt it.

Narrator: It isn't.

Blog posts like this confound and confuse the reader. And make it harder for real OSS projects to earn trust.

The TL;DR: It's BSL. Not OSI approved. So unless you read it in 2027 when it becomes ALv2, it's not open source.

The Positron 3D printers have always interested me. I'm glad that the community has continued to iterate after the original designer dropped off.

The video below explains the "JourneyMaker-Positron" and boldly says that it's an project.

The GitHub for it is licensed CC-BY-NC. That is not open source by the OSD and is non-conformant to the Open Definition. :sigh:

Question beyond my making skills:

What's the easiest/smallest tool investment to cut spring steel?
As in the PEI coated stuff used on beds.

I'm tempted to clamp it between wood and use a jigsaw with a sheet metal blade, but I think that might make a razor sharp edge (or just not work). Maybe an oscillating multi-tool?

Can it be done with some or tools?

Random thought:

Can a decentralized 'brand' really work? A local experience taints the viewpoint of the broader brand. It's kind of weird to call something one thing (the brand) if there is little consistency locally.

I was having a chat about something that wasn't Mastodon, but it makes me think about the legit terrible experience some folks have with instances. It's hard to argue that their experience with Mastodon wasn't bad, but the flaw is local.

You know, when you buy a house or property you can’t know some things.

In my case, the parking spots directly in front of place are widely used by driving instructors to practice parallel parking.

I constantly have to watch new drivers nearly hit my parked car. So nerve wracking!

This is my Sovol SV06. It’s been a great little workhorse after picking it up used and adding .

With the weather turning cooler, we have a little more static electricity around. Normally it’s fine, but this printer seems extremely sensitive to static. Any sort of static discharge to printer will immediately make the printer lose connection with Klipper. Relays on the same circuit occasionally caused the same problem, although not always.

Has anyone else had this problem?
