I’m getting mild trypophobic vibes for some reason

I like to think of online gaming. 2 teams against each other. One side uses cheats for part of the match and runs the score way up. Midway through, they turn the cheats off and apologize, but the score is still lopsided.

Old players might drop out and new players might join in, perhaps to the point where most players in the match were never around when the cheating occurred. You might even argue that some of the score gap might be attributable to differences in skill between the two teams. But it’s undeniable that one team is benefiting from an unfair advantage, and doing nothing to adjust for that perpetuates the unfairness.

Now, imagine that the game also has a mechanism that makes it easier to stay in the lead once you get there.

Could you imagine…

  • AI company prohibits use of AI for software development and internal reports: “We can’t really trust the outputs”
  • Electric car company refuses to install charging stations in employee parking lot, CEO claims e-vehicles “aren’t really a good long-term investment anyway”
  • Founder of meat alternative company states product “honestly doesn’t taste that good,” pivots to factory farming

Hopefully none of those end up being (or already were) real headlines. But seriously, I wonder if this will cause a decline in the quality of the product Zoom puts out. If they don’t buy into the vision of remote work, are they really going to design the best tools for remote working?

Fair point. But I do wonder if you end up with different products if you approach it from the standpoint of remote work vs hosting webinars vs inter-office communication.

At first glance, I only saw it as a person reading a book. What do I win

Google hides the install button for most Play Store results (www.androidpolice.com)

“Google is constantly optimizing and tweaking its apps through various A/B tests, and the latest one for the Play Store has us scratching our heads quite a bit. We’ve noticed that the familiar and handy install button is disappearing for some in the Play Store’s search results, which means that you actually have to tap...

Wake me when we discover Google charging app developers a premium to put an install button in search results.

Transportation is up there, and I guess the cloud computing stuff is at the whims of employers and corporate overlords. But it is possible to get by without streaming services.

I don’t have much else to offer in addition to the suggestions already here, but I will say I feel your pain. I also got the desire for home printing somewhat recently, and quickly got stuck wondering… “Is there such a think as a non-evil printer anymore?”

Brother is mentioned a lot, as is laser. But I also value color printing, and I had an impossible time finding a Brother color laser printer in my price range. I settled on one of their ink tank models instead.

Yeah, ink isn’t supposed to last as long, but I haven’t had to replace it yet, so I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Mostly I just ended up not printing as much as I thought I would.

Oh good now I might actually watch them

Ehh… I’ll give the other one a tug to make sure it isn’t loose. But I’m not going to untie and retie it unless I have to.

In case you're mad at yourself for closing your precious window with all the right tabs opened, note that Firefox allows to reopen recently closed windows (jlai.lu)

I generally have a “home” Firefox window with my most used tabs pinned. Sometimes I close it before another window, so I was frustrated to “lose” it and having to redo my pins. But recently I discovered this feature. Joy!

Do we need to do a ranked-choice vote on the next flavor of mountain dew or something so we can put this “people won’t get it” argument to rest
