Un Dorian Gray sin pasado, ni patria ni bandera.

I'm just a guy in the #pnw who likes going on adventures, and playing games with friends.

Three things I love: the Oxford Comma, irony, and missed opportunities.

Whew! Long weekend. Around 50 contacts, as I spent a lot of time coaching new amateurs on how to make Field Day contacts. How much money you spend on your rig has zero relationship to your ability to work a radio. My $50 vintage Kenwood TS820S and scrap wire dipole did awesome.

madcodger,

@ai6yr This is something I've always wanted to get into. I have to renew my license next year, but still have never really broken into the hobby.

Today was me being bad at judging distances from the previous guesses as you can by all that white.

@Thoreau @slow_rocket Such a good series.

Today I am thankful that generally cutting off part of your finger above the top knuckle will generally grow back.

madcodger,

@jerry Did that in December. Did you have to get it cauterized?

Looks like the marine front made it. Petrichor and now the rain just started. Doesn't seem like it'll stick around, but I'm glad for it at any rate.

Welcome to (similar to on the other site). Thank you for following along tonight, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about bikey stuff on Mastodon! These posts are autoscheduled as we're in the 3rd week of our Kamishibai workshop (out of 4). Feel free to answer asynchronously at your convenience. We'll start out with an introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today, and what was your last ride on a cycle?

madcodger,

@ingalls @ascentale @enobacon
It's been a few years since I last rode to Boring, but the last two miles from Damascus was gravel. Doable, but much slower on bike.

@madcodger your bio Oxford comma joke is better than my bio Oxford comma joke, kudos to you! 😂

madcodger,

@a
Aw thanks. Yours was pretty clever too though. I missed it at first lost in the hashtags.

madcodger,

@a Yeah, having hashtags in your bio is good for people finding you. I don't think your bio wasn't clear, just your joke I missed because I was more interested in your interests instead of the grammatical humor 😅

madcodger,

@a
Oh God, I forgot about that whole Ashton Kutcher thing. I started on Mastodon, but eventually migrated to Calckey, but yeah I really like the vibe here in the fediverse. Same with kbin and the feeling of old school Reddit.

The internet was a much better place before we handed control of it over to like five companies!

madcodger,

@a
With kbin being much newer, there are far fewer instances at the moment, maybe like 4? I'm on kbin.social but mostly because that was the only option when I joined.

It's one part I don't love the Tankie views of the Lemmy devs, and one part I like the UI/UX of kbin better (plus integration with Mastodon/Calckey).

Actually, that's a similar reason why I like calckey better than Mastodon, the UI and the extra features.

madcodger,

@a
I'm an android user, so I went with @fedilab while I was there. I've heard great things about @elk for desktop though.

madcodger,

@a
In my mind, Calckey : Mastodon :: kbin : Lemmy.

One thing I really like about the fediverse is you get to choose how and in what format you want to receive the same information. So if Facebook is more your style, you can see all this over at Friendica, etc…

jupitersigh, to fediverse

Possibly a silly question, but does anyone know if there is a fediverse equivalent/answer to Pinterest? I have a lot of issues with Pinterest itself, but I do find it useful for collecting idea/mood boards etc. So I'm wondering if there is an alternative beyond going back to just saving images to my hard drive.

madcodger,

@jupitersigh
It's not out yet, but @pinetta is possibly what you're looking for.

I’m trying to decide if it’s a good idea to do an 80 mile out and back of the Rogue River Trail over my 5-day Fourth of July weekend.

Pros: Exciting opportunity to see rare wildlife like black bear. This is the only place i’ve ever seen bear in the wild. No snow. The challenge of needing to do at least a few 20 mile days to complete.

Cons: Weather looks to be in the 90s and the trail is exposed. Unclear where exactly I can park overnight. 4 hour drive each way. Lots of Poison Oak.

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe @intrepidhero @freeder23
Thanks for the recommendation. I've been looking for something along these lines, so I just ordered one.

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe
I like the orange, but it doesn't work well with my skin tones. I have a Patagonia Everyday Hoodie in blue that I like, but not for hiking… so I went with the green.

Also, you had me at

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe
Oh the Duolingo pain is real. Can you buy a bunch of streak freezes?

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe
I could be wrong, but I think you can use as many as you have. But currently you can have a max of two at a time… unless you're part of a special club. So that won't work either.

And yeah, offline mode should really be a thing, especially if it syncs when you're back online.

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe
Ooh, look at mr fancy over here! I'm also curious if it actually work though. I found an article about it working but it was from a blog, nothing official, so I guess you'll see one way or the other.

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe Eh, if it's around here and it's just black bears I wouldn't. Except getting between a mama and her cubs, black bears are generally more scared of you than the other way around. Grew up with them on the east coast and we just ignored each other.

Brown or grizzly on the other hand, make peace with your final moments and hope to pull a Revenant.

Some people want us to think the failed but for me it didn’t. I feel far more engaged with the community here and it feels like the an active small town.

I wasn’t ever here or on Twitter for followers, mostly just to chat about weather, but I also have more followers here after less than a year than I did on Twitter even though I was there for more than a decade. Engagement on my posts is more than the other place too.

madcodger,

@ingalls @silentobserver It was the same on Reddit. Didn't matter what you posted you'd get a dozen replies telling you why you were wrong. Much prefer this.

5 adult men squeezed into a "mini van" sized submersible with no seats, no standing room, no back up plan, no GPS & one window. It's bolted on the outside while piloted with a game controller. Insane.

@pivoinebleue 🔗 https://mstdn.social/users/pivoinebleue/statuses/110574116704724363

Most people can't even earn 250k a year and here we have 4 people (not counting the pilot) spending that amount to travel in a cramped submersible run by a actual video game controller.🤦🏻‍♀️

It may very well be their coffin if they are not found soon. 😳

madcodger,

@pivoinebleue We always seem to forget that regulations, at least in the US, are written in blood. There's a reason why standards exist.
