I'm just a guy in the #pnw who likes going on adventures, and playing games with friends.

Three things I love: the Oxford Comma, irony, and missed opportunities.

Happy Thundershirts and PSTD Day to all who celebrate.

madcodger,

@R @mckra1g Do you know if that's just personal fireworks or also the public ones, like downtown and Oaks Park?

ingalls, to random

I hate to be that guy but modern gender reveal pageantry is ridiculous to me.

madcodger,

@ingalls Absolutely. If you really feel the need to participate in this, stick with a simple cake with hidden color inside. No need to one up each other by starting a forest fire or murdering grandma, or any of the other absurd endings that have happened.

I think humidity tires me out more and faster than actual physical exertion

madcodger,

@DaNanner I grew up on the east coast and thought that misery was normal. It wasn't until I moved to the west coast that I realized I didn't have to go to bed in wet sheets (we also didn't have ac). Now I've gotten way too used to living in a dryer climate and visiting family in PA is taxing in all the ways. Do not miss!

Anyone know how to boost a post from ? I cannot, for the life of me, figure it out.

madcodger,

@ADHDefy Copy the url for the post on kbin and search for it here. Then just boost as normal.

madcodger,

@ADHDefy oh, sometimes that happens. Not sure if it's a bug, or server strain, but it eventually works. I tried it last night when I made the reply and it was working at that time. Especially with enshittification day in full swing, things will be a little wonky around here I'm guessing.

The direction the internet is going is very good news for people who want to ditch their internet addictions

madcodger,

@amydentata With attempting to block anyone using an ad blocker, and with the general decline there, I think it's only a matter of time. Though I wish Peertube had more traction. Google search I did give up already.

We all need to normalize single-user Fediverse servers so that all these federation/defederation wars can be minimized.

madcodger,

@atomicpoet As soon as that Calckey hosting site is ready, I'm there!

madcodger,

@riversidebryan I'm pretty decent at following well-written directions and probably could do it myself… but I also know I don't have enough patience to fiddle with it and would rather someone else deal with that for me. I don't mind the admin side of things though.

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe What part of the city are you in?

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe Ah that makes sense. I'm on the other side out in East Portland. One thing I do not like about living here is the neighborhood is not very walkable at all. Something I miss as I used to go for a lot of evening walks

madcodger,

@andrewbriscoe Oh yeah, I get that appeal. I've been wanting to live somewhere that's a bit remote and quiet, while simultaneously being close enough to the city proper so as not to be too isolated.

Lived in a farm in southern Oregon for three months that was 15 min drive to "town" which was a Safeway and a racist antique store. And a 45 min drive to Coos Bay, which also leaves a little something to be desired. Bit too remote or too lacking. I might be looking for the best of both worlds trying to have convenience and solitude πŸ˜…

@kainoa Did you have to answer today's Wordle?

madcodger,

@kainoa I wasn't sure if it was the same for everyone. Solved the Wordle just for it and it didn't recognize it. And that's where I lost interest. Good on you for getting that far with it though!

@JoshuaACNewman @jhpot No, @kainoa got up to 36 rules, I think. One of the later rules requires the current time 🀯

Very excited to have done the full waterfront loop (including going around a train on Front) on my own power by today (not using the e-bike motor at all, though I did take my battery just in case). Today’s 17.7 km is way better than last time’s 5.9 km.

It’s still a bit short of what I could do when I rode regularly but this is a big motivation boost.

madcodger,

@ingalls
What's an ebike like compared to a normal bike in terms of weight? Does it take more effort to pedal when not using battery?

lisa, to random

Revealing my gender identity on Mastodon turned out to be quite the event. I really should have saved the title β€œMy coming out party” for this post.

On Thursday morning last week, I began migrating my old Mastodon account to a new server with a new username. When that process completed, I published a series of re-introductory messages.

Then my notifications went crazy, sounding as if a caffeine-addled speed addict started slapping the bejeus out of my doorbell.

And when I could finally read the replies racing past, I started crying.

So much affirmation! So much support! Not a single NAZI or TERF among them. Just kind people welcoming and embracing me. They wereβ€”every one of themβ€”wonderful.

But… but it didn’t stop. Not on Thursday, not even on Friday. By the time the deluge slowed, there were hundreds and hundreds of comments. And over a thousand new followers. I lost track of how many boosts and favorites were sent my way.

Of course, I had to reply to all of them. I was compelled to acknowledge each kindness, not just with a rubberstamped message but crafted words for all those who made the same kind of effort for me.

And sometime late Saturday night, I finally managed to catch up to the latest comments. I also followed back anyone who sent a message that I wasn’t already following.

It was totally worth the time and the typing. Because people and connections matter. That’s why I belong to a social network in the first place.

Anyway, this is my love letter to all of you on Mastodon. Thank you, again.

@lisamelton.net I'm glad you're able to finally be your true self, and that we've carved out a special place here on the internet where you don't have to face that kind of horribleness!

Whew! Long weekend. Around 50 contacts, as I spent a lot of time coaching new amateurs on how to make Field Day contacts. How much money you spend on your rig has zero relationship to your ability to work a radio. My $50 vintage Kenwood TS820S and scrap wire dipole did awesome.

madcodger,

@ai6yr @tsherrygeo Thanks, I'll check them out!
