I'm just a guy in the #pnw who likes going on adventures, and playing games with friends.

Three things I love: the Oxford Comma, irony, and missed opportunities.

Every summer my son and I try to hike at least once a week, usually in northwestern WA so we don't have to spend a lot of time driving. Our favorite hike from last year was Lake Valhalla in the Stevens Pass area of the Central Cascades. We're making a 2023 list now and would love some recommendations. Please share your favorites!

I was lucky enough to meet this fledgling barn swallow a few days ago.

Not only is it adorable, but it illustrates the remarkable wing geometry of these spectacular precision fliers. Look at that long sweeping wing!

We are under a Red Flag warning here in the southern Willamette Valley of . Very high winds, hot temps and low humidity means assclowns and their illegal fireworks could cause some trouble tonight.

Fireworks are banned in Eugene city, but are just fine across the river in Springfield, and all rural areas. I doubt the Eugene ban will do much, 'cause knuckleheads gunna be knuckleheads.

Go see a public show and try not to set your neighborhood on fire, k?

Realized the last couple summers that I never sleep as well or as soundly as I do when I put on the air conditioning so the fun joke here is I CAN get a good night's sleep but I literally have to pay money every fucking time I do.

One of my favourite parts of being on mastodon is that you don’t need to maintain a specific brand like you do elsewhere. I can be sad, share garden photos and tips or talk about my vagina and engage with a mosaic of people. I love it.

No, recruiters.

I do not want to be part of a "challenging" team.

I'm in my mid-50s. I want to be part of a "mature" team, a "powerful" team with a large and well-managed "throughput", a "structured" team that knows how to use processes to quickly and accurately handle the Same Stuff Happens Every Week so that when someone else comes screaming in with their ass on fire babbling about something someone else broke and We Need To Document This Thing NOW NOW NOW, one or two of us can calmly turn from our current tasks, neatly and quickly handle La Emergencia, and calm the panicked person's heartrate without raising our own.

I'm old. Fuck "ambition". I just want a good paycheck and no dumbass "this REALLY could have been avoided" hasslepanic.

I just read another news article about why mastodon didn’t make it and is dying. It’s very sad to hear and probably explains why I have to keep adding more server capacity to handle all the people quitting mastodon.

If there was one piece of advice I could give to new Mastodon users who are finding their feeds quiet or boring, it is to follow as many people and hashtags as you can. This is not Twitter; there is no algorithm, it is not going to fill your feed with stuff it thinks you like. You have to curate it yourself. Once you do, though, it's so much more vibrant and rewarding than Twitter has been for a year.

You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

Experienced fedi users, let's not fuck this up for the new users and make them feel welcome! If you see an image without alt text, instead of scolding, spending that typing energy on writing an image description so the person can edit it in!

Kbam for Kbin is coming along!

I suggest you follow @hariette and her app for now

She is building an amazing Kbin app inspired by Apollo which is iconic, my app Kbam will be a bit different as I don't want to duplicate her efforts

Fediverse app developers like her are often underappreciated, please let her know how much you appreciate the efforts of a Kbin app ❤️

It's great to see so many new people joining various services.

Let's talk about some terminology to help you -- don't worry, we will keep it simple.

The is a word used a lot. Basically, it is a way for lots of social servers to talk to each other and share posts. Like email, we are all on different email servers, but they all communicate.

When you join the fediverse, you pick a server to join. Some servers cater for niche topics. Don't worry, they still talk with the fediverse, but it means your server has people with the same interests as you. Other servers are more general.

There are various server types. Here are a few examples:

Importantly, all these servers talk to each other. So, if you are using Mastodon you can follow someone on Pixelfed and Lemmy and Calckey, all from your one account -- and interact with them too. How great is that?

There are NO computer algorithms in the fediverse to force content on to you. You only see posts from people you follow. So follow lots of people; you can unfollow later.

Do an post to let people know about you. Use the hashtag '' to allow others to browse collective posts and maybe follow you.

You will see I have used the # a lot here. Hashtags help others find similar posts. Use them for key topics in your post.

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are not sure.

Enjoy, be safe, and be courteous.

One of my great loves is drystone, and I'm one of very few female drystone wallers in Scotland/the world.

Here's something we built recently. A 'planticrub' inspired structure.

Planticrubs were small, circular, drystone enclosures traditonally used in Shetland/outer Hebrides for growing kale plants.

US government officials have relied too heavily on social media to pass along emergency alerts rather than improving what were once robust stand-alone systems.

These systems still exist and reach the vast majority of Americans (NOAA weather radio is the main one), but the technology is severely outdated because they’ve just twiddled their thumbs and were comfortable with social media because it was easy.

I know I already blurted out a reminder this week, but right now would be a really good time to make use of the “Hide Boosts” functionality. Even for your fave follows - we’re all firing off a lot of crazy stuff at each other, opt out if you need to calm anything down.

I do, undo, and redo “Hide Boosts” and mutes regularly, depending on where in the zeitgeist noise is highest or focus is needed.

We’re gonna get noisier, it’s inevitable. Please embrace the idea that You Are Your Own Algorithm.
