I argue semantics for fun and profit.

Avid reader, lapsed writer, lackadaisical coder, aspiring dilettante, junior Elder Goth.

She/her, but they/them is cool, too.

Folks posting about the 15th anniversary of the made me go dig up my oldest post I could get to -- 16 years ago!

What a little time capsule. The more things change...

I just dropped my Summer 2024 semester class for so I can concentrate on the Summer of Protocols grant for adding E2EE to ActivityPub. I'm pretty bummed; this is my second semester in a row that I've had to drop out. But I just can't hold down a day job, work a full-time role on the grant, and do graduate school classes. It's just too much.

@evan The things getting in the way are pretty cool, though!

'Librarian Andrew Gray has made a “very surprising” discovery. He analyzed five million scientific studies published last year and detected a sudden rise in the use of certain words, such as meticulously (up 137%), intricate (117%), commendable (83%) and meticulous (59%). [...] The explanation for this rise: tens of thousands of researchers are using [...] LLMs tools to write their studies or at least “polish” them.'

This is how I consume social media right now.

If nothing else, the fediverse will greatly reduce the screenshot ouroborosity.

Wow! Successful whale handshake!

(Note I constantly misread the "whup" calls as "whassup" calls and will continue to refer to them as such).

First impressions of a new server:

  • I can follow (some) folks on Threads: awesome! This is the dream!
  • Going from a 5k char limit to 500 takes some thinking (I know there are tools for splitting longer posts)
  • Nice to see all my followings are followed [edited: I get it now that -ings came over but -ers did not!]
  • A little sad that my posts don't come over but that makes sense...

Just migrated over from https://eldritch.cafe/@micheleann

I've really enjoyed the extremely well-governed and actively moderated experience here at eldritch.cafe but I do want to follow a wider swath of sources which, at least in the short term, are going to be found on some of the "big ones" like Threads.

I absolutely understand the desire to create multiple spaces with different experiences -- and that is one of the great things about the fediverse!
