Can we stop building new hardware for a bit? I don't even understand how hardware that was built 20-30 years ago works, let alone anything today.
Like, I spent last weekend implementing the CORDIC algorithm, which was invented in 1956, and I'm still not done with everything that you can do with it.
I just want to spend all my time learning how all this crazy computer stuff works. I want to reverse engineer stuff like the PS2 or N64 CPUs. The more I dig into stuff, the more everything seems like it's just mysterious sorcery
Maybe the capitalists in their glass towers will take global warming a little more seriously now that Manhattan is shrouded in an ominous, choking haze from the world literally burning
@malcircuit studying history and politics in the 90’s gave me a very warped idea of the future…the Berlin Wall had recently come down, Nelson Mandela was freed, then the USSR partially imploded, the West believed they had ‘won’ the Cold War and Francis Fukuyama was saying it was the End of History (if we’re all liberal democracies then there will be no further war). My university education ended in 2000. By the following year - 2001, the world was an entirely different place again.
@malcircuit Are you familiar with Lily Simpson's videos? She's got one specifically on trans issues in Friends, and talks about how pervasively homophobic it was.
I work at an automotive company that shall not be named, and we just got done with a kind of brainstorming session about potential technological innovations we could work on for cars going forward. All it did was give me a headache and hate cars even more (getting a job in this industry was a mistake).
All people, regardless of whether or not they are able to work, should have enough money for food, clothing, shelter, electricity, HVAC, healthcare (including mental health), childcare, transportation, internet, and self-care (a.k.a., leisure or "fun").
And if "the market" can't afford to pay people that much, then some (or all) of those things should be free and universally available.
I think I figured out a possible career route that could be good for me: lab tech. Like, a technician in a physics lab. Setting up equipment and experiments, gathering data, maybe designing and building some basic electronics systems. Kind of like all of the stuff that a physicist does, except for designing the actual experiments, and analyzing and understanding the results (I find all of those overwhelming).
It's hard because I kind of like doing tedious, detail-oriented stuff, but it also has to be complex or interesting enough not to be completely boring (welcome to #AuDHD, Mal).
A lot of roles in engineering tend to lean more towards the complex end of the spectrum. Like, it's expected to be able to deal with ambiguity and unstructured environments — to kind of lead people (if only yourself). I've discovered I'm worse at that than I thought. I kind of just want someone to tell me what to do.
@malcircuit FWIW don't forget to give yourself credit for the fact that you can see this tension within yourself and can recognize it for what it is. Many cannot.
AuDHD folks really struggle with how capitalism says their value is their productivity. It's especially easy to slide into the habit of always working under pressure, like capitalism wants, because that's the only way to feel focused, lacking other aids.
You are worth more than just your productivity under stress.
You have no control of how others think or feel. You do not owe them an explanation. An explanation implies that one is needed — that you have to justify yourself. There is nothing wrong with being trans, no need to justify anything. Either they accept you, or they don't, and that's completely up to them.
Geez I sure have come a long way since May. Not sure why this is resurfacing now, but None of that arrogant BS I was talking about mattered at all. LOL
Want to be permanently obsessed with excellence and achievement, to your own detriment? Simply go back in time and fill your youth with feelings of intellectual inadequacy and failure.
Soon you too will be compelled to move to ever greater levels of "success" because nothing is ever "good enough" to fill the void in your soul
@malcircuit I've been wondering, for the last few videos, how many eggs she's cracked.
And then in this one she just straight up asks the question: where's the dude?
"Masculinity is something about which I know more than I should, but less than some of you might think. I studied it for a number of years, but I never quite had the natural talent. And I want to reach out to young men ...(to) offer a positive role model."
Employee, to HR: Hey, I'm having a mental health thing right now and it's interfering with my job. I already have a doc and therapist that are helping me. I'm literally doing everything I can on my end to get past this. Is there any other options to help mitigate the impact to my job (i.e., ways to help heal without getting fired)?
HR: Check out our EAP website! It's super helpful!
EAP website: Have you tried eating healthier and exercising? Ever heard of this great thing called "mindfulness"?
