"Computador" or "computadora" (informally "compu") is the Spanish equivalent of the English word "computer." It originated from the Latin "computator." Another term used in Spanish, specifically in Spain, borrowed from French "ordinateur" (from Latin "ordinātor"), is "ordenador."

There are intriguing cases, such as Albanian, Greek, and Armenian, where the words are thought to share a common origin, although the precise root remains unidentified, probably of the form *skʰodoro.

In Norse #mythology, #Thor is the god associated with storms, lightning, and thunder. Similarly, in Roman mythology, #Jupiter assumed a comparable position as the god of the sky and thunder. #Thursday was attributed to Jupiter, a tradition adopted by Germanic peoples as well. Additionally, ancient Albanians also adhered to this cultural practice of linking Thursday to the deity of fire.

Carro [ˈka.ro] resembles the English "car", both originated from the Gaulish "karros." However, it also means "cart," which could lead to confusion in some countries. Proper pronunciation is crucial too, it could be understood as caro [ˈka.ɾo] "expensive."

Auto is simply a shortened form of automóvil "automobile.
"Coche" [ˈko.t͡ʃe], seem strange to English speakers, it is derived from the name of a Hungarian village, Kocs, but it is the same root as in "coach".

Although at first glance dva and zwei may appear distinct from “two“, they share a common linguistic ancestry traced back to the Proto-Indo-European root, dwóh₁.

In Spanish, the hummingbird is commonly referred to as “colibrí,” yet diverse regions offer a multitude of alternative names. In Mexico, it’s known as “chuparrosa” and “chupamiel,” with the latter term also used in most of Central America. In the southern regions of South America, it is called “picaflor,” while in the northern areas, “chupaflor” is more common.

How to name a new invention? Simplify. In Ancient Greece the term "alphabet" was not a completely new invention, but they needed to name it. They wrote it as ἀλφάβητος (pronounced alphábētos), derived from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, α and β, in other words ἄλφα (álpha) and βῆτα (bêta).

🗓 Leap year. Année bissextile. Schaltjahr.

We mark this rare February 29 by celebrating the unique nature of the EU.

Our Union, with 24 EU official languages, shows what being united in diversity means.

Multilingualism is our greatest strength– It breaks barriers and helps us travel, collaborate, and understand each other.

Let's celebrate it every year, every day.

The color pink was introduced in the vocabulary late, like orange and violet. In many languages, it was taken from the French word rose, which appeared around the 12th century. The color in Welsh and English, pink, is named after the flower Dianthus plumarius.

Football 🌍 seems to have a universal name. Arabic "Kurat al-Qadam" despite the difference is a calque: ball & foot ⚽️🦶. Yet, some languages diverge significantly. English soccer is a shortening of "associated football, Italian "calcio," meaning "to kick", Hungarian' "labdarúgás" (ball+kick) & Slovenian "nogomet" (leg+throw).
