I'm at #PyconUS in Pittsburgh and I have 10 copies of "Software Engineering for Data Scientists" to give away, thanks to O'Reilly. If you'd like one, stop me and say hi, or send me a message to meet up at the conference, and I'll set you up with a copy!
I was feeling like I'd probably over-packed, but we've been in transit since Wednesday night, it's Friday morning and I'm in an airport hotel instead of my final destination and we still don't have a clear path to make it all the way there. Crew timeout, broken plane, hurricanes, car rental snafus. 😮💨
I've used probably 90% of what I packed and most of the surprise kid entertainment has been a hit. 🩵
Here's hoping we actually make it to his grandparents today, though!
I have a #PyConUS / #Seattle “missed contact" question; I spoke to a Tammy who was at #PyCascades and PyCon US, and we talked about GitHub's contribution graph; if anyone knows who that is, can you put her in touch? Thanks!
Kinda confused 😵 not sure if I'm still going home tonight?? As soon as I touched down at YYZ, I got multiple flight cancelled/delayed email notifications (and SMS, and Mobile app notifications).
🤷♀️
Sitting it all out while I'm snacking at Maple Leaf Lounge, I'll read it all later once they finalize it. I'm sure it will all work out. My travel insurance will cover whatever I need, so no worries. #travel
I got a seat in airplane and I'm headed home for realz now.
Delayed by 90 minutes.
Was given $15 meal voucher.
Moved to a middle seat of an emergency row.
Eh, 🤷♀️ there are worse things in the world to complain about. #travel
When will I learn 🥹 some things are too good to be true..
We've been on the runway for one hour now. Still told to hold on while they wait for maintenance crew.
I tried getting up to use the lavatory but was told to sit back down 😣 ( made it there on my second attempt 10 minutes later when no crew member around 🙈)
Now the flight crew are making a round giving free earbuds (normally costs $)
I decided to be #vegan for the week of #PyConUS 2024. I put little effort into this endeavor but I did think about it during each meal.
I'd like to share how it went, but first I'll note why I did this.
Since early 2020, I've been attempting to gradually reducing the animal suffering I cause (as much as I'm individually able to).
I focused one-by-one on small habit changes that had large impacts (e.g. I completely cut out chicken first). After ~2 years of this, I was #vegetarian.
@treyhunner Not sure if you found this yet: Sree's Food about 10 minutes walk from the conference venue. They have Indian vegan and vegetarian dishes, kinda like a takeout counter, but tasty. They're only open for lunch though, so you can sneak out in case the onsite meal is not satisfactory for your needs. (I know it's probably conflict of interest that I said this but hey my job is done)
Anyway, just an option for next time.
Are there any videos for #PyConUS? I saw a bunch of comments about the keynote and other talks about they seemed really interesting, but I can't find anything after the fact.
@doctormo if you're registered you can watch it in the online platform. (In person registration gets access to the online platform too).
Otherwise videos are usually uploaded to YouTube a little later. (Last year it took 2 months after the conference)
@andy_warb That's still good, at least you're getting paid at all 😅 Currently I'm doing the things, and people continued asking for my help to do things, but I'm not getting paid
I have never been a fan of services like Uber/Lyft and would actually prefer an actual taxi instead. Our last Lyft ride in the US would probably really be the last time ever.
Our Lyft driver said he just got off duty being a state police or something, still in his uniform when he picked us up. As I scooted in the backseat with my two kids, we noticed an actual shotgun on the front passenger seat.
So today I woke up at 3 AM to send my family to the airport with a rental car.
