Time to watch the Ottawa PWHL game, in Ottawa against Minnesota. Like all the PWHL games, it's available on YouTube!

I'm making a coffee-cake baked oatmeal for breakfast. First time making this recipe and I was planning on my favourite baked oatmeal, but I was scrolling through recipes and the streusel topping sold me 😜 https://healthienut.com/coffee-cake-baked-oatmeal/

Ah the challenge of trying to identify an actor who never really did leading roles, and you can't remember specific things that they were in. "That guy, that was in a bunch of stuff." Ugh

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross Can you think of anyone they acted with? That's usually how I manage it. I might be able to manage finding them through a more famous person. 6 degrees of separation 😝

@OhOkKay @ottaross Wow good job IDing him. I guess he was on red green, but I didn't watch it much. He really was in like one episode of every Canadian show in the 80s Seeing Things, Littlest Hobo, The Edison twins, Danger Bay, Street Legal, etc. I forgot about Adderly.

Grandma names were pretty great in the old days.

Saw a Mabel from @Shanitoba, and an Edna from @skatem and I had a Winifred.

Anyone have a classic grandma (or great-grandma) name?

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross Vera!

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross She was at university during WWII! Died a couple years ago after reaching 100, so I imagine it was just a popular name at the time.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross I wonder how she did it. Her family didn't approve of her going and they didn't have money so presumably scholarships. Her university was in London and they were evacuated to Oxford during the blitz so she finished her degree at Oxford.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross She taught for a few years before marrying. They had 4 kids and then moved to Canada for her husband's (my grandfather's) job. He died after only one year in Canada so she went back to school and got her master's in library sciences and then she helped to set up the library at the university her husband worked at before he died (the university merged with 2 other colleges so they needed a new library). And then she worked at the university library until she retired.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross I'm guessing she didn't get a lot of credit for what she did, like a lot of women. Probably the head (male) librarian got all the credit.

@ottaross lol. That would be such a great project. Going around attaching plaques to various buildings to recognise the uncredited women who contributed to the institution.

@ottaross Would make a great YouTube channel too!

I totally earned the "I remembered it's pizza day" parenting badge today. If parenting badges were a thing. Which they should be.

@WTL 😝

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@WTL I enjoy how when I was typing it up I was picturing the badge and then thinking about how much of a (literal) pain it is to sew the badges on to shirts and wondered if pins would be more practical for parents. You just went digital 😝

Just brought the laundry in and wow that's a cold wind. Rain soon, I'm sure. Hopefully the laundry is dry 😝 it's too cold for me to tell!

    @grivettcarnac These are new ones? They've always had some, I know because I pushed strollers through there at least once a week for years. Always annoying because they'd force us to use a really indirect route through the busy part of the parking lot. Surely there's a better way to deal with shopping carts. That whole mall is really against anyone walking to it. Wanna walk there? Just walk through a giant parking lot to access any door. The Loblaws door is the closest for me but they really don't like you using it. They'd much prefer for you to dodge buses at the main entrance.

    mariellequinton,
    @mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

    @grivettcarnac I always had to go down the side to push the stroller up the sidewalk, but presumably your bike is narrower than my stroller was. They probably need one of those conveyor belt things that grocery stores especially in malls had in the old days. You'd (or the employee would) stick your bags in a bin and it would go on a conveyor belt to the outside where you'd pick up your bags. The fancy system at the mall grocery store near my house involved giving you a ticket and the conveyor belt would send you grocery bins underground to a little building in the parking lot where you'd pick up your groceries. No carts were allowed outside the grocery store because.

    mariellequinton,
    @mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

    @grivettcarnac because it was a mall. Lol. Carlingwood is an old mall and they still haven't figured out how to make it pedestrian friendly let alone accessible.

    mariellequinton,
    @mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

    @grivettcarnac Hell is having to walk through that awful parking lot on hot, sunny, summer days. Unfortunately, due to the streets in that neighbourhood refusing to go in straight lines, the fastest way to walk to the carlingwood library for me is walking down Carling and through the mall.

    Hyacinth blooming in the front garden

    mariellequinton,
    @mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

    @ottaross That one does go early. South facing so it gets lots of sun and no shade, but weirdly not close to the house, it's close to the street! Should be getting others close to the house in a week or two but they don't get nearly as much sun.

    mariellequinton,
    @mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

    @ottaross My tulips look like this. These ones are really old. Came with the house, so probably at least 30 years old. Those -16°C temperatures at night a couple weeks ago didn't seem to bother them.

    Update: that shot was from yesterday, but it's looking even better this morning!

    mariellequinton,
    @mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

    @ottaross Even some of the newer fancier ones I planted are getting close. Maybe all the tulips will bloom at the same time.
