#Boston - Weekend events thread: Memorial Day 2024 Edition. There's a ton going on around town, but what's on your radar, #NewEngland?
Friday's going to be hot again in the mid 80s, but Saturday and Sunday should be cooler/cloudier in the mid-upper 70s. Memorial Day Monday might have rainy afternoon cookouts, in the upper 60s.
(Promote this weekend's events with #BostonWeekend to play along 1/?)
I was just talking about this with my mom, as we watch the NHL playoff game tonight. The #PWHL players have just as much skill and talent to play against any NHL players, but the difference is that many PWHL players have to spend time on NOT #hockey things in order to make ends meet. A minimum salary of $35k doesn't go far. Time working jobs instead of hockey training makes a difference for athletes!
Back To Work This Offseason For PWHL Montreal Players, In Many Ways
I don't care that it's a different league with different players. A Minnesota hockey team eliminating Toronto from the playoffs is so satisfying after last year's Isobel Cup Finals.
Is the PWHL dead in the States? Toronto at Minnesota and all the seats below the level of the camera are empty. Across the ice, looks pretty full. So did the arena move everyone to one side to give a Trump impression of the crowd? Cheap, really cheap. I expected more of a hockey state like Minnesota.
The over time play of the PWHL semi between Boston and Montreal was just a spectacular hockey play. Every player had a touch on the puck to move it up ice for a bueuty goal. #HNOM#PWHL
Tickets are selling out, and stadiums are filling up -- but some places such as 680 News rarely, if ever, cover women's hockey (the PWHL). They need to hear from listeners. Let's support #women's sports. It took a LONG time for the PWHL to form, and they had to face a lot of prejudices. Feel free to use this to help draft your note to either 680 or other stations.
"Like many others, I've been watching the #PWHL and noticed 680 News almost never covers the games. Games are selling out, stadiums are filling up, people can't get tickets (I couldn't get tickets for the upcoming Toronto game at Maple Leaf Gardens). There is a serious following. Please try to include more of their games -- as well as some of the other women's sports in the station's coverage."
Ever hear of the Matilda Effect? Maybe you know women researchers who have experienced it? Here's an interesting history about it.
"The Matilda effect is a bias against acknowledging the achievements of women scientists whose work is attributed to their male colleagues."
@MichaelPorter Yeah. So, related, I've been thinking about women's hockey. During the hockey strike (was it 7-8 years ago?), the TV networks were airing rerun games. I wrote to some of them asking why not air women's hockey games since they weren't on strike. I was sure they'd get the viewers (the Olympic games certainly got eyes). They could've at least tried it a couple of times. No answer.
Fast forward to the #PWHL -- and the recent stories by sports commentators saying they are stunned by how quickly seats are selling out. <facepalm>
