Worldā€™Oā€™Techno has been missing for over a day.
If you see it on site please return it to Milliways village, or call DECT 3018.

It looks like this but entirely covered in stickers:

I love that Mercedes car radios list the frequency next to DAB station names.
Yep, frequency is useful info for FM/AM.
Completely useless for DAB.

No DAB radio lets you tune by frequency. And thatā€™s not the frequency of a station anyway. Thatā€™s the frequency of the multiplex, Digital One in this case, which has ~25 radio stations on it!

Iā€™m off to CCCamp next week for the first time, along with some of the @emf team. Who else is going to be there?

For those not in the know, Chaos Communication Camp is a hacker camp held near Berlin and organised by Chaos Computer Club, the German hacker association.

OK, I've worked out how to take a bike on an LNER train (and probobly other hitachis) and was caught out by them locking the bike storage after setting off, and not being there to unlock it. Here's the whole process

1.Book your ticket and book a bike space.
2. Get there early, and ask a platform guard for help as the bike compartment might need unlocking
3. Put your bike in.
4. Ride to your stop
5. Check if its locked
5b. Immediatly ask a platform guard to unlock the compartment.
6. Get off.

Wide angle photo of the empty bike compartment, showing two vertical bike racks, at different heights to help make two bikes fit.
Selfie inside the train with the bike compartment. I'm wearing a bright yellow cycling jacket and grinning.

Computer storage NERDS: I'm looking for a cost-effective 1U faaast NAS.
This is the best I've found, for about Ā£700. The next best i found was ~Ā£1800.

Know owt better i could get, or any reason I shouldn't get this?

No I'm not building my own from scratch.

I just got a scam call from someone trying to steal my mobile phone account.

Never read out an OTP (One Time Password) text message to anyone on the phone. They're only for you to type into an official app/website as you log in, in order to check that it's actually you.

If you get a call "from a company" who send you a text message with a code, they've most likely typed in your phone number into the recover account or reset password screen on the website, and need the code to "prove its you"

I highly recommend against locking your car keys, house keys and wallet in your car, in the peterboroughsire countryside nearly 100 miles from home, where your spare car key is.

Next week I intend to go to Amsterdam.
Last time I tried that, the monarch died just as I got through security and I never got on the plane.

Will it happen again?

  1. Get a cleaner.
If youā€™re like me youā€™ll do the rush-tidy thing before they arrive so they can get at the surfaces that need cleaning.
And then the place will be clean and your mind may be clearer to think of of other stuff.

  2. b) While anxiously avoiding the cleaner in another room in the flat I normally accidentally end up doing something productive.

My Windows 3.11 nonsense continues:

I've connected it to the internet!

  • I browsed the first webpage
  • I chatted with @jonty in IRC (both in DOS and in Win 3.11)

Screenshot of Windows 3.11 VM showing mIRC IRC client. I shouldnā€™t be so amused by this now IRC from an acorn I miss using IRC from my psion via IRDA

I got new stickers.
No theyre not for sale, I normally hand them out when at events etc.

BUT I was about to place some around Finsbury Park for you to find if you wanted one but itā€™s too windy and they wouldnā€™t stay put.

Finding an alternative shortlyā€¦

I got my first ever pair of glasses, and omg my computer screen now looks like it's in HD!

The optician said my prescription was so minor it wasn't worth bothering with unless I had a load of eye strain. I didn't notice any eye strain but I have been increasing text sizes a little over the last few years, so I thought I'd give it a try with a Ā£20 pair. I'm so glad I did.

I can still see my screen perfectly fine without, but I'm definitely less headachey after wearing them!

As silly as it would be to do, I am regularly tempted by the idea of long distance day trips, using direct flights.

Eg. Getting a flight to New York that lands at 7am and getting the 11pm flight home.

Not for practicality or anything, just because itā€™s doable.

The one direct flight to Australia from the UK isnā€™t timed well for this because QF10 lands at 1300 and QF9 departs at 1845, only giving you maybe 3 useful hours in Perth. (After 16.5hr and Ā£1500). Worst of all youā€™ll be in Perth :p

Something Iā€™m always disappointed by in apps is them not gracefully dealing with intermittent internet.
So many feel like theyā€™ve never been tested on slow/patchy connections.

Why not let me:
šŸ”¹press like, cache it, and send it when I get internet?
šŸ”¹press send on a message, cache it, and send it when I get internet? (WhatsApp handles this one well IMO.)
šŸ”¹open the message notification and see as much text as the notif held, & load the rest on reconnect?

Iā€™ve just thought. Eating the rich could be a green issue as well as an economic one. Theyā€™re probably worse for the environment than beef
