Move Component To - very easy to use but interesting node in Unreal Engine, for example, you can make a magnetic crane that will lift heavy objects, like a car in Half-Life 2

The Web Development Glossary books and website just received a facelift and additional content!

If you purchased the book and don’t get updates automatically, the new version (1.1.118) should be worth a manual re-download. For website users, the site just caught up with the book again:

When you write longhand, you write slower than typing. Because it takes longer, you spend more time with what you’re writing. When you spend more time with what you’re writing, you remember and learn more. Typing shortcuts memory by shortcutting time.

I just discovered Daniel Dennett after one week he passed away. 😔

With some online support, I've translated to Portuguese an article he wrote on 'How to make mistakes'

https://web-archive.southampton.ac.uk/cogprints.org/288/1/howmista.htm

There's nothing more grave done by schools than teaching us to be afraid of making mistakes.

I'm adding in the replies the link to the version in Portuguese.

RIP

Anyone got great recommendations for books talking (with tons of schemas!^^) about level-design, layout, etc...?

I feel like there's not much out there on internet about that subject and a ton of "level design" tutorials talk about the pixel-art/modelling aspects

I'm interested in how to create interesting map layouts.

I'd say I'm at the intermediate level on that picture and from there, I can't seem to go higher by myself

Hey fediverses, is there any good online shell scripting primer for non-programmers? Something like "automate your stuff with unix" or so, ideally focused on the methodology rather than gory details of shell scripting.

Is it just me, or should a "Tutorial for Beginners" explain Why to do things, rather than just show How?

A girl at school felt ill, and had to go home. Of course, we need to establish contact with the family before we release a kid, so I got her to ring home. She rang a contact, showed me the screen on her phone, to let me see who she was ringing, and the word on the screen was one I didn't recognise.

She finished the conversation, and I asked her about the word. Arabic for pappa, she told me (transliterated into the Latin alphabet). So I asked her about the word for mama, and so on. The conversation lasted all of a minute, but it was as if this girl grew a couple of inches -- a teacher was interested in HER background. She left smiling, despite feeling ill.

Arabic is my no means a small language, but it is where I live, and so the same mechanisms this opinion piece describes ("You must change to please us.") are all too often apparent from day to day.

Show a little curiosity, rather. Learn a little from those whose perspactive is different from yours. And above all, respect other people and their backgrounds -- they are as valuable as you think you are.

Language learners, I have questions! 🙋🏻‍♀️

I have noticed that when I speak Japanese (currently my weakest language, A1) and try to fetch some words, at times my head turns to my second weakest language (currently Finnish, B1).

And it's not the first time! Back in the early days of Finnish, I would revert to French; and same thing happened with German when I was learning French.

Have you noticed a similar pattern when speaking your weakest language?

So much of what we learn is self-taught.

Reading, questioning, thinking, researching, experimenting, failing, trying again -- it is through this process that we grow in our skills and intellect.

And pretending, imagining, daydreaming, wondering -- all those things I got in trouble for at school -- those are part of learning, too.
