📢 I have decided to make the core operation of Team Topologies non-profit. TT authors Manuel Pais and I are committed to the core mission : "...to make work more humane and more effective for everyone ..." and means I will not be able to profit personally from core TT activities. 💵🚫

More details over the coming weeks as changes happen...

I'd welcome your thoughts and feeling on this! 🙏

I hate when people say only paid services can be #privacy respecting;

No? A lot of the essential privacy #software /services is free, open source, operated by a non profit.

Meanwhile, a lot of paid services STILL manage to be completely not privacy respecting.

Even if you pay for everything you use, you might be as better off as someone who didn't even pay for anything.

Yes there are valid cases where it's better to pay for a service, but don't undermine free, #libre, #nonprofit software-

Reading @Gargron message about Mastodon US, really wondering why german government removed the non-profit status.
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/04/mastodon-forms-new-u.s.-non-profit/

seth, to mastodon

I think this is a good thing. Either they are a non-profit in Germany or in the U.S., but their mission stays the same.

People like to make a big fucking deal out of nothing. The new board of directors includes Biz Stone, of Twitter-fame. Just because he’s on the board doesn’t mean that the open source, FEDERATED, project is going to got to shit.

I think people just like to complain. The good thing about the Fediverse is exactly that… federation. You’re NOT stuck on one instance or even one flavor of service to stay in touch with people.

If Mastodon does go to shit, guess what? Check out the other Fediverse projects. Hell, start a WordPress blog and connect it to the fediverse.

I get why people are nervous, but is it necessary? Maybe? I don’t see it though.

Thoughts are welcome!

So as of today Mastodon now has a US 501(c)3 non-profit entity to go along with their German corporate entity that appears to be losing its non-profit status for reasons the don't know yet. #mastodon #fediverse #news blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/04/…

From my experience with , it's extremely rulebound. I don't sense any malice by the govt of , just overbearing bureaucracy

I like the fact has more rules in general than the for . but there is a limit, and capricious bullsh** like taking away 's status over, what I assume, is some tiny clerical error or minor rule discrepancy, is just embarrassing for Germany.

Does your public library use Overdrive/Libby for ebooks or audiobooks? ⚠️

In the US and Canada, the answer is probably yes. And you should speak to your library staff and commission about it.

Libby is now owned by a private equity firm & making sketchy changes: https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

The latest development is that their overbroad privacy policy allows them to sell your borrowing history to advertisers: https://infosec.exchange/@longobord/112243098104196246

Society publishers: Preserve your independence!

New study: "Self-published societies have achieved sustained growth in their revenues from publishing while societies with publishing partners have seen a significant decline. For…societies with the means & the will to publish journals in their own right, this study provides compelling evidence for retaining, or even reclaiming, their independence."
