I listen to all kinds of music with saturation (and loads of [post-]metal/hardcore/rock). I support artists I like as much as I can. I (badly) play the guitar (Les Paul & Orange amp). Toots about music, occasionally food, sometimes politics (leftist). French guy, toots in English. He/him.

I started to read the first book of "Anathem" by Neal Stephenson.

I dunno what to expect, but the setting seems intriguing.

@neurothing I love pretty much anything this guy writes. Anathem is mind blowing and very creative (as always!)

@derthomas how does it work, will we have nice T-shirts and badges to pin on our jackets? Will there be an emergency squadron that can take care of our lil'monsters once a week for a good night sleep? And more importantly, will there be booze and blasting metal during the group's meeting?

I was chatting to a work colleague exactly 20 years younger than me and how his parents think they are young but actually they are old in their ways. I asked for specific points and he mentioned them only liking old music and films.
At least I still go to the cinema and metalhead.club keeps me young with modern metal music. I might stave off being old for a year or two more if I'm lucky 😉

mbr,
@mbr@metalhead.club avatar

@Kitty @mdmrn statistically speaking people are listening to music they discovered in their late teens (15-20 yo). There are pretty solid explanations from psychological, sociological and biological points of view. We -- music lovers always keen to discover new stuff -- are a minority even if some of our social bubbles tend to show the contrary! But I don't know of any explanation (apart from the fact that I'll probably die -- of boredom, but not only -- with the same music over and over)

TesseracT seems to be a favourite and I know for sure that at least @vanessawynn and @thomas are huge fans.

I listened to their latest album, but it didn't really click.

So the question is: are they a ?

Welcome to my next 🤘

Wanna see something shocking?

Here's a list of beloved bands I barely listened to yet:

Mercyful Fate
Cult Of Luna
The Ocean
Tankard
Sodom
Destruction
Blind Guardian
Lamb Of God
Celtic Frost
Amon Amarth
YOB
Opeth
Meshuggah
Dark Tranquillity
Cradle Of Filth
Dimmu Borgir
At The Gates
Lacuna Coil

...I guess I won't run out of bands for Metaljourneys anytime soon.

@derthomas nice list! I'd go for Cult of Luna as they're an all time favourite for me.
Although, the funny thing with CoL is that I listened to a few of their albums a long time ago but it didn't click and I forgot about them... Then came the collab with Julie Christmas, I couldn't get enough of this album and then I came back to the rest of their discography and they became one of my favourite bands. Funny how one album can sometimes change everything.

with Kaki King today. She's an amazing musician, first and foremost a (very talented & with a unique technique) guitarist and a singer, and she can actually play all the instruments on her albums (and notably do so sometimes live, with the help of the Holy Loop). King is very versatile, some of her work purely instrumental, sometimes acoustic, electric, more rock or more experimental, always great. I discovered her with Dreaming of Revenge in 2008:

There's a bunch of good songs from Eels on the subject, but my favourite is probably:

Eels, a Line in the Dirt

The song is simple yet powerful and very bittersweet

Following last week , let's continue to explore Karina Utomo's work with her main act: High Tension. She's not the only woman in the band as the drummer is Lauren Hammel, who's also playing (in a totally different genre) with Tropical Fuck Storm. High Tension is pretty brutal, their blackened chaotic hardcore being pretty dark... And their latest release talks about colonialism, oppression and the anti-communist purge in Indonesia in the 60s.:

Today is the last day of my "No Sweets no Snacks January" aka

I know this is not interesting for most of you, but doing this in public keeps me motivated and focused.

So time for a little retrospective 🧵

Why am I doing this?

a) I eat too much sweets (waaay to much)
b) Jan 1st I stepped on the scales for the first time in a long time and couldn't believe my eyes.

Never in my entire life had I ever had >90kg. My feel-good weight is below 80.

I am not embarassed to admit that I rated Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head with 4/5 stars on because 2 things:

  1. I don't care if they turned full generic mainstream pop rock afterwards
  2. The album is really good

Now today's choice might be less controversial, although I never heard of this band before:

🎵 Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones

@derthomas there is no shame loving music, whatever it is. If this album means something to you, that's great and nobody should bother you for that. I'll continue to value your views on the music you share here, even if you love Coldplay 😬
I guess many of us around here have strong opinions on music because it's an important part of our life and we're mostly interested about niche genres for which it takes some dedication to find (and defend) the music we love.

Crippled Black Phoenix - No Regrets

Okay but why is it 'der salat' and 'die pizza'? I don't get that

@derthomas @jake4480 @MetalheadDana @AqiDrago

mbr,
@mbr@metalhead.club avatar

@biggusmickus @vanessawynn @AqiDrago @derthomas @jake4480 @MetalheadDana pizza is feminine in Italian so I guess it makes sense that in languages with genre for nouns it stays feminine (that's also the case in French: une pizza)

mbr,
@mbr@metalhead.club avatar

@derthomas @biggusmickus @vanessawynn @AqiDrago @jake4480 @MetalheadDana sorry but that's not remotely true. Le Brésil, le Maroc, le Danemark, le Gabon, le Liban and I can go on...

mbr,
@mbr@metalhead.club avatar

@derthomas @biggusmickus @vanessawynn @AqiDrago @jake4480 @MetalheadDana ah sorry I missed the pun (as a French person I'm obligated to get serious any time French language, wine, cheese or cuisine is discussed, not complying may result in a lost of citizenship 🤓)

mbr,
@mbr@metalhead.club avatar

@derthomas @vanessawynn @biggusmickus @AqiDrago @jake4480 @MetalheadDana ah you were lucky enough to find French people speaking English! Another great French tradition is to complain about the fact that foreigners don't speak French properly while in the mean time not being able to speak English (or any other language)

(I won't throw any rock at you, I spent 10 years learning German and here I am, struggling to read anything from the German crowd on metalhead instance)
