There's definitely less engagement on Mastodon these days compared to, let's say, one year ago.

I can see new faces all along, but less engagement on toots, both likes and comments.

Do you feel it?

@thomas @sharan thanks Thomas for these numbers! Do you know the number of toots and/or of user interactions (reply, boost)?
For sure there is a threshold of number of active users to have for an active platform, but you also need "real" activity (toots, interactions btw users)

@sharan @thomas yeah 100% agree. I feel a sense of community that I experienced in the early '00 on the internet and that I was missing since then. The global village has become a dystopian megalopolis run by tycoons; with the fediverse it feels like we're back to what the internet should be. This collection of small-scale, human-scale instances feels much more comfy, with quality interactions and respect. May the instance stay small, that's one of its strengths

Now that the first official, federated connection from a Fediverse account to a single (!) Meta threads.net account has been made, the Threads topic is boiling up again.

Many of us Fediverse citizens see this as an opportunity for the Fediverse to gain in importance.

At least as many are sceptical about whether we should be exchanging data with Threads at all.

As an instance admin, I'm worried about making a decision that could alienate users on both sides. 😓 🧵

Every other odd day in December means it's @Kitty 's turn on and they made this an interesting one:

There is a band that releases 2-5 album per year, each time in a different genre.

This year they released their 2nd metal album, and what an absolute masterpiece that was.

Who is the artist you’re a big fan of that would surprise people?

Personally I am a huge Vanessa Carlton. Most people just know A Thousand Miles but I love all her albums.

@HailsandAles that would probably be Tunisian artist Emel Mathlouthi. She's an awesome singer and artist overall, and I have to say I discovered her thanks to (mostly rock/metal) covers she did during the first lockdown.
She's the other favourite artist my 4.5 yo daughter loves to listen to (her all-time favourite being Sleater Kinney) and I'm happily listening to her work with her

There are some criteria to keep this madness under control:

  • no big band (max 1,2 mio listeners on lastfm)
  • only "good" bands you think everyone loves (so no wife beaters, fascists, racists and stuff)
