Next smartphone I buy, which one do you recommend?

Things that make me angry about my current smartphone Samsung Galaxy S21Ultra on a Verizon plan is the mandatory software updates in which they install WITHOUT MY PERMISSION stupid apps like Netflix and addictive gambling games and stacking block games and Candy crush. God knows what else they install without my permission. I...

mertn,

+1 for pixel. I just ordered a 7a for grapheneos.

mertn,

I stopped playing them. I used to do it for many hours/week but just quit cold turkey a year ago. There are more interesting things to do with a computer.

mertn,

I would become a lesbian. No way I want cock im me.

Adguard/pihole style blocklist to block microsoft web sites

I am trying to block all connections to microsoft ip addresses. I only occasionaly boot windows and don’t want it phoning home. I tried disabling the net interfaces in device manager but windows just re-enables them and send god only knows what back to their servers. I don’t like relying on disconnecting the ethernet cable...

mertn,

Thanks for the list. I will try the mac address block on the router idea for windows and set a non default mac address when linux boots.

mertn,

I do that as well. I just use dual boot windows for samsung disk tools and logitech software. Couldn’t get either to work in a vm.

mertn,

Yes, dual boot. It is a Dell Optiplex. Windows re-enables devices disabled in device manager.

mertn,

Not drinking today. I had a fermented drink but it was kombucha at zero % clise enough.

mertn,

The cops like strip searching teenagers the dogs choose though.

Developed nations pledge $9.3 billion to global climate fund at gathering in Germany (apnews.com)

Developed countries pledged $9.3 billion to help poor nations tackle climate change at a conference held in the German city of Bonn on Thursday, authorities said. However, nongovernmental groups criticized the outcome, saying the funds fall short of what is needed to tackle climate change....

mertn,

I use proton stuff on linux. Vpn works, email works with a kludge called protonmail-bridge, drive only works via browser interface which is a hassle because it can’t be automated. Password manager works as a firefox extension. I don’t use calendar or contacts. Happy customer.

mertn,

There is no linux app for proton drive

mertn,

Two hours till midnight and no alcohol in the house. I can make it. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

mertn,

My cat is outside. To keep her out of my bed.

My favourite OSS: BOINC (volunteer your computational power to science!)

I want to let you all know about what I think is one of the coolest yet most under-appreciated FOSS tools out there, it’s called BOINC lemmy at !boinc . The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing has been around for decades and has delivered teraflops of computing to scientists on a daily basis for absolutely free....

mertn,

I have to remember this for next winter. Going into summer here.

mertn,

Its 10pm on the 28th here and I haven’t had a drink today. Not going out in the dark to get one either.

Proton services discussion

I’ll start off by saying everyone’s economic situations are just as varied as their threat models and how people make decisions on which services can be specific to themself and not one that can apply to anyone else. The services one chooses to use for free or to pay for may be based more on what they can afford vs what’s...

mertn,

Proton plus here too. I use the vpn, 500gb drive for backups, and have set up my own domain name email. I tried their password manager but didnt like it at all. I dont think it is ready yet.

mertn,

I put my dockers on mirrored zfs pool and have enough spare parts in case of breakdowns.

mertn,

I have the OS (with docker) mirrored too. So no reinstalling, just disk or other parts swapping in case of a failure. I hope. A mothboard swap is the worst downtime. I have done this and needed to fiddle with network settings due to changed net interface name to get the server up again.

mertn,

I just put all my photos on photoprism. I’m quite happy with that. self hosted at home.

mertn,

nvidia-smi gives info about gpu usage and drivers in use.

mertn,

after a few years of use I gave my roomba to my neighbour. I get much better results with a bosch manual vacuum snd some exercize too.
