I've decided SD Card designators are more confusing than USB versions.

Those huge HC/XC/UC designators? Mostly irrelevant if you're using modern devices. You should be looking at the tiny I/II/III roman numerals for speed ratings.

Plus the other designators (the circled number, and the number inside the U) are all the same in all my cards, despite their speed rating varying considerably.

@brunoph I just keep buying the same card over and over again, about 512GB/yr. They will discontinue it some day and I’ll be paralyzed about what to buy next. What a mess.

@brunoph also I always forget until it’s too late but their write performance is only guaranteed up to like 80% capacity. once it starts getting full it drops to like 1/4th.

@brunoph yeah looking forward to CFexpress too. I know it’s a rich person thing to say but I just don’t delete SDs anymore and treat them as a third backup. I rarely take more than 1TB of pics a year (~$200) so keep them as a third backup. (Not clear how long they hold their data in the archival scenario though.)

There’s something spectacular about enduring a ridiculously choppy boat ride for 4 hours and then arriving at the Farallon Islands. While it doesn’t look far from San Francisco on a map, the waters are treacherous and the journey from Half Moon Bay is arduous. People puke nonstop. Thankfully blessed with no motion sickness whatsoever, I try to take photos of the marine and other wildlife I see. Thousands of murres, hundreds of sea lions, a beautiful cacophony.

Jupiter has been visible from my balcony at a somewhat convenient time lately, so I got out the old 10in f/10 SCT last night... and was quickly reminded what a battle it is to use a 2500mm focal length. Stacked 15% of 7000 frames from the 685900nm (near-infrared) band, with terrible seeing over the convective mess of downtown .

I replaced two light switches today, one of which was a three-way. Those are complicated! And if you get it wrong you can cause a short and trip the breaker - ask me how I know. But it all worked on the first try, this time. An electrician is I!

People you’ve used CPAP/APAP machines - do they work? Have they made much difference to your life, and sleep?

@GossiTheDog yes, was def worth the hassle. if you can afford it, also get an O2Ring or sleepU for independent validation of your problem and improvements. they’re like a mini sleep study every night and relatively unobtrusive, can help you find patterns to improve things even without cpap.

/r/AskSF is 60% of the time someone saying ‘I just had the best dish from <this Asian country> where can I get something just as good in San Francisco’ and then being mad that it doesn’t exist or isn’t as good here

If they were willing to travel to Sunnyvale or Milpitas or Fremont you can at least find some suitable options, but nope they expect highly specific renditions of a traditional dish in the most expensive city in the world coz they believe we have the best food scene in the world lol
