How many engineering orgs are adding "AI accelerated engineering" projects to their 2024 priorities, but not any projects/time dedicated to actually finishing their 200 half-completed migrations and addressing obvious developer experience paper cuts? I bet a lot of them.

But sure, throw another thing onto the pile. That'll help.

@kyleve well once you’ve finished the AI initiatives, the AI can go back and do those obvs. 🌌🧠

didn't bring the right camera body for birds but still enjoyed watching all the turns hunt near SFO this morning (plus a cute willet). lots of new birds this time of year along the bay.

More nerditry.

I shoot mostly for black&white. I have two sensors for my camera, a regular color sensor and an "achromatic" black&white only version. I use them both, even though I am almost always shooting to produce a B&W result.

The advantage of the color sensor is convenience. You can essentially add any color contrast control filters you want after the fact in post processing as part of the conversion to B&W. But there are limitations...

midendian,
@midendian@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze disregarding focus it’s also tricky to balance diffraction vs optical quality (eg iris aperture) versus sampling at that wavelength range. the airy diameter is varying by 2.5x across the sensor sensitivity. narrowband imaging is much easier! (cool photo!)

Why could Ansel Adams make such great, enduring photos? Four main reasons:

  • He had a great eye for subject and composition

  • He knew his subjects - the American landscape, etc - exceptionally well.

  • He was an absolute master of technique, some of which he invented and developed himself.

  • He was willing to schlep an enormous amount of delicate, heavy, expensive gear long distances to the middle of nowhere. Seriously.

well on the upside people are remembering hepa filters and masks exist.

ai6yr, to cycling

I blame all the folks around here, just running some calculators on the difficulty of going back and forth from my nearest local grocery store (for the heck of it). For some odd reason, the map says the "longer, flatter route" has an identical 17.8% section compared to the shorter, steeper route.

Shorter route, 1.30 miles, 216 feet ascent, 89 ft descent

Ok folks. I’m starting to research whether to consider an for and local errands.

Any advice for someone just starting to investigate, things you wish you’d known, key considerations & trade offs, etc. ? Also appreciate any tips on bikes that are good for very short folks. (And please, don’t try to tell me all bikes work for all sizes … )

midendian,
@midendian@mastodon.social avatar

@cbdawson I don’t have any specific recommendations but be really cautious on weight… some of them are extremely heavy to the point of being unusable if you need to take it up stairs etc (my rad city is like 70 lbs).

I've decided SD Card designators are more confusing than USB versions.

Those huge HC/XC/UC designators? Mostly irrelevant if you're using modern devices. You should be looking at the tiny I/II/III roman numerals for speed ratings.

Plus the other designators (the circled number, and the number inside the U) are all the same in all my cards, despite their speed rating varying considerably.

midendian,
@midendian@mastodon.social avatar

@brunoph indeed I started doing it after macOS Image Capture deleted the wrong photos due to a UI bug several years ago, lost like six weeks of a Thailand trip 🙃
