found out today that my wife is getting a big promotion that comes with a substantial raise! something in the neighborhood of a 50% increase in salary, practically unheard of for this company.

buuut…. it means commuting to greensboro. from where we live in raleigh, it’s at least an hour drive each way, maybe close to 1.5 hours. longer if traffic is bad, which it often is.

she’s thrilled (and rightly so) but also bummed about the location shift, understandably.

@jake4480 thank you! yeah, a bad commute was the reason we moved to raleigh in the first place! we were each previously commuting about an hour each way to get here. figures she’d get relocated not even a whole year later. but the raise seems to be worth the trouble as far as we can tell now.

@jake4480 we put our move off for a couple years, until we were absolutely past the point of tolerating that commute lol.

now, we may have to decide if it’s worth another move. somewhere “halfway”maybe since i’m still working in raleigh. we each have to be in-office at least 3 times a week, unfortunately.

i just hate moving so much! but we’ll see i guess. maybe i’ll finally quit and look for a fully remote job.

gonna have to bite the bullet and upgrade to 11 at some point… but strongly considering creating a second partition so i can install linux for general daily use. my laptop came with Win11 and i’m really just not a fan. https://mastodon.social/@verge/112254163389548893

@jake4480 yeah that is a huge concern. and i’m sure my work laptop is also going to be updated against my will lol, no way my company is going to pay the ransom to keep 10 running. just hoping that doesn’t create too many headaches for my department, but i’m not optimistic…

@jake4480 yup. my company is very reactive and not proactive at all, i’m sure they’ll act all surprised the month before this goes into effect. and my pay grade is not nearly high enough for me to have any say about it!

new pedal day! my first pedals actually.

i know these are “cheap” pedals, but i really wanted to just see how things go with something affordable before i invest a lot of money in fancier units. also, no fancy effects yet, but hopefully will just have more control over my sound beyond the pickup controls on the bass or the bass/mid/treble controls on the amp.

still figuring out what to do, having this weekend pretty much all to myself. decided to pick up my and learn some new things.

here’s “i wish” by stevie wonder. feels good to be adding songs to my limited repertoire. i’m still not great, but i can feel myself progressing which is a really nice feeling.

@jake4480 i also went a long time without a bass, i only just started getting back into it a couple months ago! i played for a lot of years as a younger person, played in high school jazz band and all that, but i feel like i’ve lost a lot of what i built up. but man, i’m so glad to have a bass again, it’s so much fun.

@writeblankspace these questions always stump me, as simple as it seems like it should be!

i consider myself to be bisexual, but i have a strong preference for female-presenting people and i’m married to a female-presenting person, so from an outside perspective, most people would think i’m straight. it feels like i’d be intruding in this space if i said “i’m queer”. i want to be an ally obviously, but i don’t want to step on toes… does that make sense?

@pinskal always find myself coming back to vulfpeck’s “dean town”. it’s an upbeat and funky little bass feature. it’s at the start of my main playlist and always makes me feel hype.

i’m curious: i try to only boost posts with images if they have descriptive alt-text, but so many stuff i like and want to boost has either no alt-text, or extremely basic alt-text that is only one or two words. like, a webcomic or meme and just says “comic” in the alt-text or something like that.

do y’all keep yourselves from boosting things if the alt-text doesn’t seem descriptive enough? i can’t imagine it’s helpful for people using screen readers.

@nyrath very valid! i wonder if something as descriptive as “complicated graph showing a logarithmic comparison of the relative sizes of common objects in the universe(?)” would be sufficient, compared to just something like “chart” without any more context. or other people have said they think it’s fine if the body text of the post describes what is in the image.

@nyrath @colo_lee i guess no more or less annoyed than just a screen reader saying [image] with no context. i don’t know the best solution, but i think a sentence or two describing what the graph is meant to convey would be helpful to most people if they couldn’t see the image visually.

@nyrath @colo_lee i don’t think you need to describe the whole graph. but something as simple as “graph that clearly demonstrates the relative difference in size between whales and the sun” or whatever is more helpful than nothing at all. but i’m 100% not here to tell you how to use mastodon, just wondering what other people’s experience and opinions about alt-text are. your use-case may be very different than mine.
