if you wanted to set up a “British restaurant” abroad, to which people would go to, much like they go to an Indian or Chinese restaurant, what dishes would you include on the menu as quintessential British gastronomy?

Today, the social media’s remind me that the actor who portrays John Connor in Terminator 2 is called Edward Furlong.

Given he was a teenager at the time, I’m pretty sure there is a Furlongs per Fortnite pun to be made somewhere….

Yesterday I had a wonderfully gleeful drive back from the conference by introducing a Gen Z cab driver who invited me to play my own music in his car to the Jeff Wayne version of War of the Worlds.

From the "wait, it's not the soundtrack to the film", to the awe when Teófilo Martinez started the initial speech - "I know that voice from somewhere, like, old-time movies...", to the expletive I got when the strings started playing, to the amazement that this was 1970s music...

It's the little things...

So I've recently become one of the people who have to regularly take their glasses off in order to see certain distances. I've asked my ophthalmologist, and there is no technology (e.g. varifocals or contact lenses) that I can use to avoid this action at the moment.

When I do take my glasses off, I am currently biting the legs in order to keep them handy. This is, at best, unsightly. I cannot keep them on the end of my nose (too big), or lift them up onto my hair (too greasy).

So I'm considering buying a glasses cord and let them dangle when they're off.

I'm just wondering - fedi wearers - what other options do I have to keep them handy? Alternatively, what cool variations can you recommend on the trusty glasses cord?

Last week someone sent me this link to this lovely article exploring how the concept of a tea monk could be done in this planet and time. https://peacefulrevolutionary.substack.com/p/a-guide-for-prospective-tea-monks

This intrigued me because of the tea and the social aspects of it, given I’m on , but I was also intrigued by the book that inspired the article, introducing tea monks in this fictional world, and from which there were ample quotations in the text.

So I impulse-bought it to add to my kindle. And I’ve just finished my previous book. Thus I decided to start “A Psalm for the Wild Built” by Becky Chambers next.

Now this is a dedication page I can get behind.

A recurring conversation with @quixoticgeek is how we’ve lost the browseability and social aspect of bookshelves, film, and music collections in this modern all-digital age, especially the social aspect.
For those of you not born in the 1900s, we mostly purchased our books and music, or borrowed from the library, but it had a physical presence in our lives, and the bookshelf was something that you kept and curated as part of it. People visiting you would glance through it when bored and maybe comment on your choices or taste and make recommendations of things you might want to read or listen to.
It also allowed you to choose visually between a bunch of things, with a much broader field than the recommendation screen of your media player.
It’s very difficult when your books are in a cloud to have that aspect of life, or even have a “to read” pile, or the bit of the bookshelf with the guilty pleasures.

Trying to explain service classes to a non-Spanish acquaintance, and I now have several doubts.

  • An AVE is a high speed service that only travels on high speed lines.
  • Avlo is a low-cost high speed service.
  • An Avant is a service that is partially on high speed lines, partially on conventional lines, designed to be faster than a MD for the high speed section.
  • A Media Distancia is fully on conventional lines

I gather an "Intercity" counts as a Media Distancia as far as ticketing is concerned.

But, what about the Euromed? Is that an Avant (and thus you can get a 50% reduction on the season pass) or an AVE (so no discount available)?

A shout out and a well-masked hug to those of you, like 2 of my party, who are having to cancel plans due to . It’s very frustrating for everyone involved, yes. But everyone’s health is important.

Instead, lie back, heat up some nice soup, lounge around in pyjamas, maybe consider a FaceTime later, and enjoy not having to be in the frenetic environment of a Christmas meal.

For those of you travelling to see family, especially elderly relatives, do them all a favour and take a quarter of an hour before you set off to test yourself. Let’s try not to spread this disease any further than it needs to.

I have discovered, to my horror, that the Crazy Frog is 20 years old. That being said, its hit singles were released in 2005, so there’s still that.

I am somewhat disturbed to consider that as well as the inevitable Axel F remix there might be more modern ones to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

So with inevitable horror, I’m now worried about:

does RushE

Or even worse:

is Never Gonna Give You Up.

What other remixes are going to horrify your 2025?

I've just renewed my Spanish Qualified Digital Certificate, which is useful for signing documents and for accessing Spanish administration websites, amongst other things.

I did it with the Spanish Mint (FNMT), who issued my previous Certificate. It was free, yes, but as Spanish governemnt website, it took way too many uninituitive steps, and required installing two separate pieces of java-based software in order to do it.

Spain's digital certificate infrastructure is second to none, but the issuance of the certificates is still a minor nightmare on Windows, let alone MacOS o Linux. When I next need to do one that requires documentary evidence, I might just go and find myself a third party eIDAS Qualified Digital Certificate Issuer and pay for it just so I don't have to deal with this awkward website.

I may not even have to pay, there seems to be a free letsencrypt-style approach available here: https://certificadoelectronico.es/

My Tetereta Tea Advent Calendar arrived late, so I have a little catching up to do! First off I have some Tiki Taka Tonka.

Opening the sachet brings you an overpowering smell of something Minty. A look at the teabag seems to show some orange peel and what I assume are tonka berries in the teabag.

I steeped it in boiling water for 7 minutes before removing the bag.

It’s not as minty as the smell promises on fist tasting, but it leaves a nice minty residue in the mouth that cools down and smells nice when you breathe in. Other than that, it’s quite a nice, mild fruity taste, nothing overpowering. I’m going to give it a 7/10
