That thing, where it is early in the morning, you've fixed your breakfast of a single packet of instant oatmeal and dry wheat toast, you've added the boiling water to the oatmeal, poured a mug of water with Earl Grey to steep, you eat the toast to allow the hot water in the oatmeal to expand a bit, you start eating the oatmeal, and then BAM. You didn't stir the oatmeal enough so halfway through you get all of the sugar added to the packet in one bite and your world is UPSIDE DOWN.

That will wake you up much quicker than the Earl Grey could ever hope for.

Well it's too hot for my celtic brain, I'm knackered from having fun in cars all day, and I've just failed to see the aurora from either of my houses, and now I'm whingeing about it on the internet. I'm having a real day. Time for bed.

I am about to be much less well informed.

The Washington Post doubled my weekly fee. $96/yr
The Atlantic went to $79/yr. I asked for any consideration possible and they dropped it to $49.99/digital.
The New Yorker is a firm $99/yr digital.

I understand Capitalism.

I’ve read and happily subscribed to these publications for years. Years.

Now it’s a choice between feeding my brain and life.

I despise those options.

I know.

Two things I want from a cloudy day when it comes to my solar panels and various batteries I want them charging - the house batteries get charged, and the EV gets charged. The latter has happened today, the former should be there with an hour or two. This is important during storm season here in Texas. Since the EV is fine for several days, I'll leave it unplugged for a few days so I can prioritize the house batteries with any excess being sold back to the grid.

Now that we are safely back home, here's why cities are absolutely un-understandable.
Our friends wanted to take us out to dinner on Saturday. They had been to a restaurant before and thought it was good. It was, or tried to be, French, but, they said, served a tapas-style menu, shared among two. Great, we thought, as we were tired. No decisions to be made.
Wrong!
The waiter listed all the items that were available for the tapas-style, but only pointed out some on the menu, no explanation

  1. Our poor friends were mortified. I've not told the full story of the to'ing and fro'ing, with, in a less salubrious establishment, could be summarised as "stew's aff. Choose something else, hen."
I eventually had some fish which cost $MORTGAGE +£20.
Maybe the pretension was what you paid for, I don't know, I'm out of touch.
We'd been making quips about going for fish and chips as were getting hungry. It wold have been the better option.

Just used PayPal for the first time in a long time and wow, it just seems barbaric in a post-Apple/Google Pay world. (The thing where you have to re-enter all the credit card details for the transaction if you have to add a new billing address is especially swearworthy.)

The last one or 2% of charge that your phone battery needs to hit 100% is always the longest. Where and whenever possible, I always try to let it fully charge. But when I want to unplug it and take it somewhere else to use it, it's like, come on! Hurry up already!

Arrived in Copenhagen after a completely uneventful journey from Stockholm with train 525. Exactly as scheduled. Travelled in first class, as one tends to do, and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. (The SJ lounge at Stockholm C was closed for religious reasons today and would have opened anyway only at 10:00 on Sundays.) Thank you, SJ, Trafikverket, and Banedanmark. Now I have almost two hours to spend before taking the train to Hamburg.

Massy hysteria - gridlock as stretch of M25 closes for weekend

“Tahir Aziz of Woking borough council said: “We’ve never experienced something like this before. It will have a significant impact in this area. It will cause huge disruption and delays, and a lot of traffic jams.””

It pains me to use the term ‘’ but… Plenty of notice, lots of time to plan and if you are concerned about emergency vehicles stay off the roads - or walk!

Oof. This entire article in the IEEE Spectrum about the author's difficulty in changing a single vacuum tube and a capacitor in a vintage stereo (not hard). Next, I will propose they write an article "how to change a light bulb" https://spectrum.ieee.org/vintage-audio-repair

CavedaleRhones,

@ai6yr Actually the article we need is how to get decent sound out of all these WiFi devices. The Stereo Alexa is pathetic. Bose can’t do a decent implementation of Alexa. In college we were all audiophiles. JBL (or Bose or Altec)speakers, Maranz amps, and now we listen to Spotify (mostly mono) music out of these tiny pathetic speakers! .

Arrrgggh I was just thinking that maybe playing Minecraft on Easy was maybe too easy, and was shortly after bumped into lava in the Nether by something unseen and died before I could get out or anything, and ended up back in my main base where I re-equipped myself and noticed that I was a little low on both coal and iron, so I went out exploring and found lots of lovely coal and iron and was on the way home again when I stopped to explore a strange bunch of terracotta bricks under a waterfall and ended up somehow falling into the chasm and dying, and then I just ran back to try to find the place again before nightfall, but failed to.

Waaahhhhhh. and very much

I know how it sounds, but it is kinda frustrating (in a way). We have the same issue, and there just soemthing that feels like a nice treat about going out to a restaurant, and it kinda spoils it if you feel “meh, it would be been nicer to just eat at home”. But overall, defintely happy with the situation!

Four short grid outages overnight, 1000 homes nearby had an outage due to a construction-related misstep, nearby short outages as a part of the repair/recovery process. I knew about it only because the printer is not on the critical load circuit, and as the grid came up it would power on automatically each time. The first time I thought I'd somehow been hacked and ran in to check the printer for a ransomware demand being printed out (yeah I know, give me a break, this was from a dead sleep) but then got a message on my phone that the grid was back up after an outage. Second time the dog barked at the printer. Third and fourth time the dog and I slept through it. Critical load circuits had no issues.

The barista at my local liegewafel place recognizes me in line, makes eye contact and wordlessly asks whether I'm getting a cappuccino to stay while I wait for my to-go wafels. This results in her being able to hand me the cappuccino after I've paid, instead of having to be given a number and someone bringing it out to me.

Still working on getting a menu item named after me, but even if I succeed it'll be bittersweet because they think my name is "Bob."
